One very important thing that need to be done on a regular basis is back up you data into a good quality dvd (not the cheapo no name stuff but good brand name such as Sony) and/or a usb external harddrive (same as DVD use good quality hard drive not the cheap comstar stuff, always use good brand such as Seagate, Maxtor, etc)

No matter how good quality Apple machine could be they still use normal Hard drive that Window machine uses. Apple have no control over the quality of the harddrive it uses in the apple computers. When harddrive fail apple will replace it if it is under warranty but you will lose all you data.

So backing up you data is the only way to make sure your data is safe.

Hopes this helps. :D

And for all those people new to macs thinking mac is magically protect from hard drive failure. you should stop blaming Apple for fail hard drive since the hard drive itself it not manufacture by apple and most of the part is not manufacture buy apple such as rams, cpu. Also remember all computer manufactures will have a percentage of products that is produces that will have some fault. beejacon

Just a couple of points to add....

not all "name brand" CDs/DVDs are better than the generic, or less known brands. Search for what works.

Hard drives are getting less expensive by the hour, so there is no need to try and get 10 years out of your main drive. Upgrade/replace them every few years for important data, and stay away from Maxtors. Every service tech, IT pro and independent system builder that I know won't touch a Maxtor drive. At least not until there is some sign that the Seagate buyout has trickled down some higher quality control.
