Is there any way to make the "old" airport into airport extreme....?? adaptors?? or anything...I have a ibook that would like to take advantage of airport extreme....that's another question. Why hasn't apple upgraded the ibook to have airpost extreme....wasn't the ibook the ultimate wireless notebook at one time?

No. You must have a AirPort Extreme card to use AirPort Extreme wireless. APE cards are backwards compitiable, but normal AirPort cards are 802.11b only (although they can connect to a APE base station and a 802.11g network, but at only 802.11b - 11 Mbps standards), while APE is both 802.11b (150 feet, 11 Mbps) and 802.11g (50 feet, 54 Mbps).
