I was never a big fan of Premiere since version 5.5, which was awful. It crashed all the time, had a nasty UI, and was a real disk pig. Version 6 was a bit more tolerable, but by that time, FCP was out, and was a much better product.

So, adios, Adobe. Whatever. I hope Apple puts out a better Photoshop too, to watch them squirm. Companies in creative media ignore Mac users at their peril.

You seriously hope Apple puts out a better photshop type app? Dude, Apple has already alienated enough developers, do you really want them to piss off Adobe too?

Keeping mind that Adobe was developing for Mac before they were developing for PC, and that they have only dropped apps that don;t really compete on the Mac (PhotoShop Album = iPhoto, Premiere = FCP).

Trust me, it could be oodles worse.

¡Jose! Premiere is one thing - as they did not compare with FCP - and there are a few others to mess with (not the DV guy...), but I will say that PS is the very close to perfect for s/w. I mean, what app is out there that may be able to compare/come close? None that I know of. There are tons of PS Pros who wil tell you that they have yet to master it. Maybe PS for Windoze is as close as they get. Not sure that I want to suffer thru countless revisions of Apple trying to stroke themselves cause they have the staff for it. No thanks. I'm good with what PS has. The dropped support can only be indicative of the market share. Too much out there to mess with. Hi end: FCP, low end: iMovie. Super hi end - AVID (I have friends @ Muchmusic)??

As someone already pointed out! Apple has the digital video editing market cornered on the mac. No real space for Adobe to compete. This also includes DVD authoring. Adobe only makes pc versions of thier DVD authoring packages. I have no fear that Adobe plans on dropping the mac platform for products like PS or AfterEffects. The demand is too big even for 5% market share.

Actually, Apple has a decent chunk in the desktop video market cornered -- but it's not the defacto standard, yet (regardless of whatever magazine is claiming). While this market crosses over into the high-end market, television and production companies use Media100 and Avid products (not to mention others) as well.

And as great as DVD Studio Pro is -- the majority of all DVDs that are produced are done on PCs -- hence the massive amounts of DVDs that come with special DVD-ROM features that work only on the PC.

I would dare say that After Effects and Photoshop will never leave the Mac -- they have carved a niche for themselves that offer a certain level of usability that no one else can offer*. Apple is going to have a hard time convincing people to move to Shake especially when companies like Pinnacle Systems, Adobe, Discreet, et al offer quality packages like Commotion, Combustion, After Effects, and many more.

That being said... most companies don't limit their tools to just one product. Quite the contrary. They tend to use at least two (or more) of each type of product, because more often that not, each package has a specialty/nuance where the other stumbles.

I had the opportunity to check out a local production house in Ottawa called TV Factory who rarely use Final Cut (if at all... since the last time I was there) for their work, but use Media100 and AfterEffects almost exclusively.

Some of the appeal of Final Cut Pro, in part, is the ability to use in on a G4 laptop while traveling... slightly harder to with products come with hardware components.

* Part of the reason why people love Adobe products is their GUI and Workflow -- many have tried to duplicate their workspace and have failed (or were sued for infringing on their patented properties; ie:Macromedia's "Tabbed" palettes).
