Cool The Upside Thread

EDIT decided to rebrand the thread to make it more inclusive.

Was doing a search for a good thread for this, but struck out completely. Hence the new thread.

Good on ya Haley!

Hayley Wickenheiser is off to be enshrined this weekend in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Not only because of her remarkable achievements on the ice.

But also because of how she’s helped forever change the game for the better.

For proof of that, look no further than the annual Canadian Tire Wickenheiser World Female Hockey Festival, affectionately called ‘WickFest,’ that brings scores of little Hayleys to the rinks of Calgary, hoping they can one day grow up to be just like her.

“There’s that old saying, ‘You gotta see it to be it,’” said Wickenheiser. “When I was growing up, I didn’t see it — I didn’t have any role models. I didn’t know any other girls that played hockey until the national team in 1990. Now, little girls are watching the Olympics and they see lots of players they can try to be.

“And I do think that’s powerful and that it does matter and makes a difference.”
It’s certainly showing proud at WickFest.

The hockey fun for thousands of girls begins Thursday at WinSport and — for the first time — Seven Chiefs Sportsplex and continues through this weekend and next weekend.

Not exactly what the landscape looked like three decades ago when Wickenheiser herself was learning how to play the sport.
Longish article but that should give you a feel.

She is a credit to Canada and her sport.

We need more good news Canadian stories and more non-political threads. Merci, mon ami for this new thread.

Why, yes. Yes, she is.

Enjoy it, Dr.G., before some fully equipped, mentally ill male comes along, shoves a tampon up who knows where, straps on the skates & destroys yet one more women's sport.

Perhaps if more people told more politicians to get stuffed, mind their own damn business, get out of our lives & start working for us instead of against us, people wouldn't be overrun by the bastards & have the need to address the issue every waking moment...

My apologies for the diversion, eMacMan. The thread is a good idea.

Quote:
There are heroes among us, and they don’t always wear capes. Sometimes they drive Mercedes-Benz SUVs.

This story has made headlines here and in the U.S. A Montreal man, Erick Marciano, was stopped on a side street in that city when he watched a car blow through the red light on the main artery, Boulevard Rene-Levesque, cops close behind him. When the light turned green, Marciano made his left and carried on.

It’s what he saw next that pushed him to action. The fleeing car had struck a snowbank, and surrounded by cops with guns drawn, the driver made an abrupt U-turn and came back the way they’d all just come. The biggest problem? The intersection the driver was headed for was full of hospital workers on their lunch, and construction workers.

Marciano had to consider his options, or if he even had any. “I didn’t want him to hurt anybody,” Marciano told CBC Montreal’s Daybreak. “I figured, sacrificing a car was really no big deal. And that’s what I did.”

He knew many pedestrians were now directly in the path of the speeding car, so he sounded his horn and drove his SUV over the median to block the oncoming car. He knew his vehicle could take the median, and the speeding sedan could not. He also knew his vehicle could take the hit and made the block.

Montreal police credit him for protecting about a dozen people, and his insurance company is making him whole. Sometimes the good guys win.

Maybe even explains the antipathy Trudeau and his Liberal cronies have towards Alberta, and his grim dedication to a gun seizure policy.

Quote:
It took until 1950 that rats had migrated far enough inland that they began turning up for the first time on the southwest border of Alberta. It was then that the province made a solemn decision: They could either submit to the rodent hordes, or they could fight.

They chose the path of blood. Teams of armed men were mobilized to patrol a rat control zone on the border. Common citizens were enlisted to trap, poison and shoot rats wherever they could be found. Propaganda posters urged Albertans to give their rodent enemies no quarter. “KILL HIM!” reads this one from 1950.

And damned it if it didn’t work. Within a few years, the invasion had been repelled, and Alberta has remained rat-free ever since. The Alberta Rat Patrol still keeps watch on the eastern border, and whenever a rat rears its head in the province, a full-blown military response is raised to search the surrounding area and kill any rats they find. There’s even a rat-sighting hotline: 310-RATS.

So there you have it: The inspiring story of how a humble Canadian province set out to kill its way out of a problem, and succeeded fantastically. God Bless Alberta.

82-year-old female powerlifter fights off intruder. 'I was whaling on that man.'

Quote:
Last Thursday around 11 p.m., a man broke into 82-year-old Willie Murphy’s Rochester home.

But she’s not pressing charges.

“I already sent him to the hospital,” she said Monday, following a workout at her home away from home, the Maplewood YMCA at 25 Driving Park Ave.

Murphy, who is barely 5-feet tall and weighs 105 pounds, beat the intruder so hard with a small table that it broke. Then while the man was on the floor, dazed, she poured shampoo in his eyes. Then, while he screamed at her — calling her “everything but the mother of God!” — she jumped on him. And then Murphy — who admitted to uttering a few four-letter words herself — grabbed a broom (the one she uses to clear snow off her car) and repeatedly jabbed him “with all my force,” she said.

Her force is a lot.

You go, girl!!!
