Boy Scouts Belly Up

This is a bit of a shocker to me. The Scout Masters I had the pleasure to know set really great examples and truly cared. Every one of them would have strangled any sorry SOB who tried this sort of thing on one of their troupe members.

I know there are always bad apples but on a scale to drive the entire organization into bankruptcy?

Are some of the claimants opportunists and how do you cull them out of the pool?

A short quote from a fairly long article.
Quote:
Barraged by hundreds of sex-abuse lawsuits, the Boy Scouts of America filed for bankruptcy protection Tuesday in hopes of working out a potentially mammoth victim compensation plan that will allow the 110-year-old organization to carry on.

The Chapter 11 filing in federal bankruptcy court in Wilmington, Delaware, sets in motion what could be one of the biggest, most complex bankruptcies ever seen. Scores of lawyers are seeking settlements on behalf of several thousand men who say they were molested as scouts by scoutmasters or other leaders decades ago but are only now eligible to sue because of recent changes in their states’ statute-of-limitations laws.

Given our history with similar scandals from the past, I don't doubt it.

Disagree - I am a 30 year member and we already had our moment about 7-8 years ago. US is not belly up but protecting their assets in a typical US style. Canada has opened the door and shed the bad members and dealt with it already. Plus sold off assets (wrong ones IMO) to stablize but overall the trend is down without a doubt

The point is there shouldn’t be that trend.

We all wish that but todays electronics have allowed the helicopter parents to pacify the kids with a tablet or phone vs getting out and play and learning social skills. That IMO seems to be one of the reason young kids join Scouts, to put down the electronics and learn a (social) skill the Parent cannot deliver on.

I went through the cub/scout system in the 1950s and then in the 70s knew leaders who were there. I realized a decade later that those I once supported were undesirables involved with young boys. I was shocked at what I suspected was going on, in spite of no involvement with me in those years. Shocked because some leaders were my co-workers. I was shocked by what I learned and knew the movement I had, loved was lost to moral decay. I have little faith that it will have been driven out of the movement now, or ever.
