Not that I agree with expiry dates but, you may be breaking the law.

UPDATE - Children?s car seats and booster seats: How long are they safe? - Transport Canada

Quote:
All children’s car seats and booster seats sold in Canada have an expiry
or useful life date on them, even though this is not required by regulation. Manufacturers do this to inform current owners and prospective buyers of the potential risks of using car seats and booster seats that may be missing important parts, labels or instructions and/or may have an unknown history, which could lead to less than optimal safe performance when needed. People should not use children’s car seats and booster seats past their expiry or useful life date. Beyond this date, the car seat should be permanently discarded rather than donated to a charitable organization, second hand store, or given to friends or relatives. It is also important to note that if you own a car seat or booster seat made before January 1, 2012, under Health Canada’s Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, you may not be able to advertise, sell, or give it away because it may not meet the latest requirements set out by Health Canada. For further information regarding the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, please contact Health Canada:

^ that.

Even then, 2008 is 6 years old.. should be considered expired or almost expired. New ones made after 2012 have expiry date stamped, so there are no guessing.

Ridiculous law in my opinion. Sounds like a complete money grab. A reasonsble 10 year life span would make sense.
I had to literally throw out a beautiful 5 year old car seat and 2 bases which would be perfect for anyone including a low income family.

Totally agree. All that should be checked is if it in good working order.

You can't give those seats away. Just drive through any neighbourhood on trash day and you're likely to find one that even the Goodwill or Salvation Army can't legally sell.

I did agree with that until I pulled my daughters old car seat and attempted to use it for my son. When I stopped using it 5 years ago, I stored it by putting it in a garbage bag and tucking it away in my attic.

When I tried to install it last year, I found the plastic on the base was not structurally sound and when I tried to tighten the straps down, the plastic gave way. Since the base is adjustable in order to ensure the car seat is installed at a safe incline for the baby, it would drop down to the lower setting when I attempted to tighten the base down. I never had that happen when I used it with my daughter.

Would it have worked, likely. I wasn't about to take the risk though.

Wow. Did you get some new muscles and strength in those 5 years?
