sorry it didn't end the way you were hoping and they failed to surprise you. not always the best experience for me either. Took a simple MB in for a severely chipped top case on a two year old laptop and they said too bad.

To be honest, I expected crap treatment, but was willing to show a little Christmas faith tonight. I knew more than the so-called "Genius." I think he was a genius at remembering Apple policy about extending any kind of goodwill to customers.

That "repair" fee was just the price of a refurb 30-inch from the U.S. anyway.

No kidding. What's the issue with the 30"?

Typical 30-inch Cinema woes.

A: Only fires up after rebooting computer 30 times or more.
B: Rarely wakes from sleep.
C: Goes black and does not recover when its USB or Firewire cables are connected to computer.
D: When it does fire up, often fires up at wrong resolution. Resetting resolution causes monitor to go black. See A.

It is not the power brick--I have already tested it with another brick. It is not the graphics card, as the performance is identical after swapping out cards.

No blinking codes or other signals--power light is strong and stable.

Also brought in my crapped out 30" Cinema Display for a repair quote. They didn't even have a second power brick handy to test the unit. Genius was completely confused, but delighted to tell me that it could be repaired for only $1,249.00 plus TAX. On the other hand, I was offered a brand new 27" display at full price plus TAX.

Screw you, Genius Bar. I suspect their genius consists of saving Apple money and disappointing customers to the degree that they leave them alone.
So you expected full coverage on a pile of out of warranty units, one from 2006? (Your Mac Pro.) What an unhelpful bunch.

No I didn't. I phoned first to see if they would repair Cinema Displays (purchased 2008). They said they did. I expected a repair quote for the Cinema, not a replacement quote.

I also expected them to be able to test it with another power brick. I don't think they had ever seen a 30" Cinema Display.

I expected nothing with the video card. Just brought it in on the suggestion of someone in this thread because I might be "pleasantly surprised." I wasn't.

You posted above you had already tried your display with another power supply without results. You're upset about this in principle only - you already know it's not the power supply. They wouldn't have done anything differently.

They did fail to communicate what a repair means on a display -- those displays do not come apart (or, rather, they aren't designed to) so a repair means an exchange price slightly below retail cost for a refurbished one.

not an unreasonable expectation for that particular issue.
