Mac OS X 10.6.5 Snow Leopard and Finder issues

I held out as long as I could before installing Snow Leopard but recently decided to install Windoze 7 on my iMac to combat the web inaccuracies in my life... needing to previewing online work in IE to make sure it hasn't broken. Install went fine, switching to Windoze works, I get a chuckle when I'm on the PC side... everything looks so incredibly poorly horribly awful implemented and bad. I digress...

Anyways... I am noticing something with the Finder on the Mac side that is really annoying me. Wasn't like this in 10.5.

I review large amounts of images and graphics for web development, selecting, sorting, etc.

When I drag-select a group of say 20 images in a folder, open them in Preview and trash 4 or 5 of them [Command+Delete in Preview, gawd I love this feature] and then return to the folder whence they came... the original 15 are highlighted, but so are the previous 5 items in the list, be they files, aliases, folders, etc. If I then go to move the files I had highlighted, I'm dragging stuff I didn't highlight, this is not good, something is wrong here.

This never ever ever happened in previous versions of the Finder dating back to [do I really want to show my age here?]

Also noticing that if I don't double-click almost immediately, the Finder releases all of the files and only opens the one I double-click, and that's not a mouse pref either, that's the Finder choking yet again.

And, also noticing highlighting the windows in the Finder actually requires clicking them first, that's just nasty. I am so used to just swooping down into the Finder and dragging on files in an open window and they highlight.

And, and... I can't Command+Drag to deselect a grouping of files either. I used to be able to drag highlight a group of files in a list and then Command+Drag again to immediately deselect say 5-6 files in the middle of the selection.

Giant leap forward in speed though, holy smokes. I used to leave my iMac on all night because closing down several Adobe apps, Mail, Safari, utilities, etc. would usually result in Force Quits and frustration, too long to bother. Now, everything shuts down almost instantaneously. I also notice moving from my daughter's account - a few hours of SIMS out of the way - and back into my account it is much more responsive. It used to be virtually comatose until I woke up each and every app individually at least once.

Hoping Apple can fix the Finder issues, I truly believe these are bugs, as the Finder never behaved like this previously.

Anyone else noticing this, can't find mention of these online anywhere but surely someone must have encountered this by now.

Thanks.

I'm using 10.6.5 and I very carefully tried to follow along and duplicate your multiple select-view-delete in preview scenario.
But my results, unlike yours were exactly as I would expect. After deleting (cmd+delete) in Preview and returning to the source folder, the deleted files were gone and only the remaining files were left selected.
So I am inclined to think the reason your online search has not found any mention of your problem is because it appears as just that, 'your problem' and not OS X's.

Same here, is it possibly a bad install? Drive issue?

Hi, I should add it isn't the same issue every time, really depends on how many files I am highlighting, but can you Command+drag to deselect a few of the files? I can't in the Finder though any app I have tried this in still does it properly. Thanks.

Another annoying issue I am coming across... locked files that cannot be deleted until Mail is quit. I know why... these are PDF proofs I have sent to clients, they make changes, I delete the old PDF and save a new PDF into the project folder. Of course, I can't overwrite that PDF because Mail had locked it since I added it as an attachment.

My understanding of Mail is that when you add an attachment, the file is actually copied into Mail's directory for file attachments, same with incoming mail. If I save an attachment, file the mail message away but a month later delete that attachment, I can still go into Mail and retrieve it from the message. It exists separately.

So why on earth would Apple not have the same setup for outgoing mail or change it this way now? I never had this problem prior to Snow Leopard.

BTW - still having the same Finder issues - cannot drag-select additional files with the Shift key, if I drag outside of the visible files in a window, it "forgets" the files I already had selected.

And, still cannot deselect from a highlighted batch of files by using the Command key and drag-deselect.

Really annoying. I am sending this to Apple now in the hopes this gets corrected.

Hi boukman2,

Yes, I am at 10.6.6, still a problem.

I review hundreds of files from stock photography to web site graphics for site updates and it is getting more and more annoying. The latest issues with the Finder is driving me nuts.

Another thing is the window size in Preview - regardless of what setting - images do not expand to fill the window size.

I have ongoing lists of issues documented... you should see the lists I have for Adobe CS apps... a mile long and counting!

Thanks.
