The latest 14.1.2 update also updates the Sharepoint plugins at /Library/Internet Plug-Ins - they could just not require it and the plug-in update won't take over until Safari is restarted. I almost wept in joy when Adobe's Flash installer did this instead of mandating everything be closed.
I just found that page, too... Sadly, although it *answers* my complaint, it doesn't make me feel better (insert grumpy CM here). If Safari can handle plug-in and extension updates without requiring a restart, why does a stupid Office suite (word-processing, spreadsheet, presentations) have to go mucking around with stuff that doesn't concern it?
Anyone who relies on the "Find" feature within MS-Word will be less than pleased with Word 2011:

How is one supposed to do reliable, professional-quality work in a piece of software crap such as Word 2011? Even with the best intentions, even with the best level of personal discipline and work ethics, it is simply impossible.
Why? Because Word’s feature are simply completely unreliable.

...when using “Find Next” instead of the dialog box button, Word 2011’s Find command completely ignores the occurrences of the text you are looking for that are in text frames and behaves as if they didn’t exist.
Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 2 (14.2.0)

Applies to: Office 2011, Office 2011 Home and Business Edition, Word 2011, Excel 2011, PowerPoint 2011, Outlook 2011, Office for Mac Standard 2011 Edition, Microsoft Office for Mac Home & Student 2011, and Microsoft Office for Mac Academic 2011
Funny, this is released on the same day I had to re-install Office because of continuous crashes. Of course, Word was crashing at 2:00AM when all I want to do is go to bed. Here's a tip everyone: don't try to paste text into a footnote in Print Layout View if you're writing a long document.
And to rub salt in the wound, just before Word would crash, the Error Reporting Tool application would crash. Every time.
Same here.
I just read the list of improvements. Such a disappointment, unless perhaps you're an Outlook user working on an Exchange server. Otherwise nothing.
So with Service Pack 2 applied, and of course on a deadline, a simple 12-page document with two embedded graphics (charts) and tracking changes enabled... I've had my second full crash in the past 15 minutes, while doing nothing more than typing and deleting paragraphs (I'm doing a translation).
The search utility remains screwed up. Of course.
The one thing that I like is the new "distraction-free" mode, like Pages has, that puts your page up on a black background with a minimal toolset across the top (this would be a great default interface). Alas, it's practically useless, since Command-tabbing to my English-Spanish dictionary or any other app, and then back to Word, brings you back to the usual interface. Dumb.
Ah, I see it's come back up. Let's see how much time I have to work before the next crash.... sigh...
Ah, and this is so NOT cute. Upon recovering from a crash, Word displays the document you were working on, plus the "autorecover" version of the document. Guess which one is up to date, and which one is several paragraphs off? Yup - completely bass-ackwards.
