The screen on our Macbook pro went black. A computer store looked at it and said he thought the motherboard was working OK. It is a first gen with a 15 inch screen bought about 2 years ago.
Please let us know a good place in Toronto to get it fixed cheap since we are on a tight budget.
I also read on a google search that a black screen could also be from a faulty the video card but I have no idea if that info was correct. Please advise.
IS it an old aluminum MBP, with the nvidia Geforce 8600? Take it to apple (store) for a free repair, your video card has most likely failed if thats the case.

The first thing I would suggest you do is plug in an external screen and see if you get anything. MacBooks don't have "video cards" so no, that's not the problem.
Second thing to try is to boot up the machine normally, then get a flashlight and shine it directly into the screen. Can you see any trace of an image?
If you can, then what's likely happened is that the backlighting went out. Your model used fluorescent backlighting (not the LED backlighting found in today's models). If that's the issue, then the fix won't be as expensive (but you're still looking at a fair amount of money).
From the nature of your post I'm guessing you don't have AppleCare, which would have covered this. Still, you might want to take it to an Apple store for an initial diagnosis (if nothing else).
In July 2008, NVIDIA publicly acknowledged a higher than normal failure rate for some of their graphics processors due to a packaging defect. At that same time, NVIDIA assured Apple that Mac computers with these graphics processors were not affected. However, after an Apple-led investigation, Apple has determined that some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected. If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within three years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty.
Read that article. My son called Apple tech support and they gave him a ticket number and told him to take it to the nearest authorized repair depot (he was in Victoria so no apple store) and they fixed it free of charge.
Give them a call, the worst that can happen is they'll say no
If external video works, the display is at fault and not covered by the REP posted by 'winwintoo.' If there is no external nor internal video, the logic board is defective, and may qualify under the REP assuming the unit qualifies under its conditions.
More so...

The definition of a video card is not a removable board. Therefore, all computers have video cards or otherwise you would not see anything on the display...
Video cards. Graphics chip. Video chip. It's all the same deal, different words.

It might not be covered, but call them anyway, you won't know for sure unless you call. My son got his fixed for free.

I've had mine go dead twice (and been repaired) in the past 4 months. I hope it's not going to be an ongoing thing as I've had the MBP for just over 2 years now.
