This isn't really an emergency but it sure drives me crazy. I'm running OS 10.2.1 on a G4 867 tower with internal 56k modem. If I set my network prefs. to "Connect automatically when needed" (PPP tab - options), I am connected to my ISP when I fire up the computer. That's ok but if I disconnect, the computer dials up at random times for no apparent reason. No, I am not running any programs such as Mail at the time. It is quite annoying because if I want to run SETI while away from the computer, my phone line keeps having bursts of BUSY all day. (or night)

Another thing I have noticed is that if I do launch Mail or IE or any other app. that requires a connection, they time out before the connection can be made. At least in OS9 I could launch an app. and it would wait patiently until the connection was made then open. Is this a quirk of OS 10?

for the random dialing thing: do you have the iChat menu item in your menu bar? it could be trying to establish a connection, and does not need iChat running to do so. Or any other menu widgets for that matter, such as weather pop?

iChat is in the menu bar but this has been happening since well before iChat was available. In fact I think it has been going on since I got this computer and system 10
