Imac scorches/damages DVD!?!

Hello,

Earlier today I was watching one of my concert dvd's using dvd player in my 20" Imac when part way through the disk started skipping. The program displayed the skipping over damaged areas warning and seemed to stall there. The dvd was purchased new and I had only played it a couple of times before. Needless to say I was quite suprised by this and ejected the disk to see if there was perhaps a smudge on it. To my suprise, there was a dark discoloration on the outer edge of the the disk about a centimeter wide and seven centimeters long. It appears that my Imac has overheated(?) and ruined the dvd. Needless to say I am not impressed. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem with there super drive. If so, what did Apple do for you? Thanks.

I have never seen that kind of failure, but it does sound like an odd kind of failure. Perhaps the spindle bearing is broken in the drive, and is causing the disc to touch down at one particular place on the drive. This isn't an "Apple problem", but a problem with whatever drive is in the machine (probably Pioneer), and they are generally excellent drives. If the machine is under warranty - Apple should replace the unit, no problems.

I have not heard of this before, but it sounds like something is wrong with the laser inside the DVD unit. You may want to talk this over with a certified Apple tech, particularly if it's still under warranty, or call Apple.
