Hello. I have a laptop (with Windows XP) that has wireless internet and I would like to share that connection with my iMac (Mac OS X 10.5.6). Does anybody know where I can find clear steps that will lead me there? I searched the web extensively but could not find exactly what I was looking for. The machines are linked through an Ethernet cable.

Thanks a lot guys!

Just to clarify. Do you want to:
a) ) have both machines independently take advantage Wi-fi without the use of an ethernet cable
b) have the iMac share the internet through the ethernet cable attached to the Windows laptop?

Sorry about the confusion. I want:

b) have the iMac share the internet through the ethernet cable attached to the Windows laptop?

My AirPort seems to have issues and for the time being I would like my Mac to get its internet connection from my laptop.

Thank you.

If I turn off the AirPort and select "Ethernet - Self-Assigned IP", it says: Status: Connected, but I cannot open web pages ("You are not connected to the Internet"). The machines are definitely linked in some way because I can access my Mac files on my laptop.

The Ethernet cable will link the machines. Does it have something to do with the router attempting to assign the same IP to both machines? Can you assign the Mac an IP and see what happens?

Thanks Macfury. This is where my knowledge ends. How do I know which IP address to enter? I think I determined the IP addresses of both machines and I get different numbers. If the Mac's AirPorter is turned off, the router should be unable to locate it, shouldn't it?
