Hi, I need help for my sister's imac.

She have an imac intel 20" 2Ghz core 2 duo, with 512 Mb Ram since april-may 2006.

She had no trouble with her imac until february 2008 when she had to unplug it from the wall to move some furnitures. After plugging it back, the imac didn't turn on. It just did nothing, like if it was unplugged.

At that time, I've searched on the net and found some basic troubleshooting from apple website and I had her to remove and reinstall RAM. That worked one time but the problem came back one day after.

Then she took her imac to an apple store and as it always happen, it didn't show any problem there. She took it back to home and since today, the problem never occured again.

Today, she installed a new power bar, so she had to disconnect her imac. After making the change, the imac refuse to turn on. She waited about an hour and then she was able to turn it on.

Her imac is out of warranty and apple ask her an insane amount of money (about 400-500$) to analyze and repair her imac.

Is that a common problem ? Is there something I can do with her imac ?

thanks for your help !

We try to plug her imac in many other outlets in her appartment and that didn't have any effect.

Also, other electrical devices have no problem to work and they are plugged in the same power bar.

I can't say that it's the cause and it seems absurd but each time that her imac gets unplugged the problem occured right after we plug it back and try to turn it on.

It's a very strange behavior....

If the RAM isn't pushed all the way into the socket, it can cause the machine not to turn on -- possibly if the RAM is just barely making contact, it is being intermittent.

If you want it diagnosed, find an independent Apple repair person, diagnosing should me much more reasonable than that price.

Well it happened again yesterday. There was a power outage caused by a storm and when power was restored, imac would not power on.

She unplugged it from the wall for 10 mins and after it was fine. That doesn't make any sense to me.....

There's probably something wrong with the power supply or maybe the motherboard, but I guess I can't replace that by myself. I don't even know if I can open an imac with regular tools.

The guy at apple store told her it would cost 100$ to diagnose the problem and it would probably cost more than the price of the imac itself to repair it. He suggested that it would be clever to buy a new one. What an a...hole.

My imac did that for a while on and off, and one day I unplugged

the printer because I had bought a new one and it never happened again.

I would have never guessed that it was printer because it only happened once in a while.

But your problem sounds like it's directly related to power.
