software to prediagnose a drive failure

Want your HD to tell you "better backup, I'm getting ready to die"

For those that don't know, you can check manually using Disk Utility. Select your hard disk, and check the S.M.A.R.T Status at the bottom of the window. If it says "Verified" you're good. If I recall correctly, it'll say "Failing" if it detects a problem. Can anyone confirm the exact wording?

Also, just because it says Verified does NOT mean there are no issues... just another potential check.

Good point. Verified only means the drive isn't aware of any hardware problems. If your drive is acting like it's broke, it probably is, even if it says it's 'verified'. ;-)

...that's the same app as was linked in the first post. SMARTReporter has always been free.

Hi,

I had SmartReporter on my iBook and it didn't warn me of a problem prior to my HDD failing. The grinding noise was my warning.
