Safari Anoyances...

Hey folks, I am having some problems with Safari.

Firstly if I ever right click on anything flash, ANYTHING, it stops having any functionality. This forces me to reload the page if I accidentally right click on any flash component. A context menu pops up, but once I click off I can't bring it back. Quite annoying on flash based sites or flash based links.

Secondly, Safari crashes at least once each session. I will go to a new page and while it is loading the prompt jumps up saying Safari needs to close and I haave the option to Cancel, Close, Reopen. However none of these options work once I click them and I must force quit Safari and reopen. Very annoying if you have 8 or 9 tabs on the go. I have found no rhyme or reason to these random once a day crashes and once I reload Safari and revisit the pages I was on everything works just fine.

Just go to Firefox? I like Firefox, but I find Safari more comfortable and intuitive. These problems aren't make or break just annoying.

Running on an iMac Core Duo 17" 1.83 1.5gb RAM.

Any info would be much appreciated.

I can only offer solidarity. My Safari has been ridiculously crash-prone of late, too.
Of course, I have a few plug-ins - I may have to uninstall them and do the trial-and-error routine to see which one (if any) is causing this.

Anybody know of an easier way to check the bugginess of plug-ins? I currently have installed:

- Saft
- Inquisitor
- RealPlayer
- VerifiedDownload (what the heck is this?)
- Flip4Mac WMV player
- iPhoto Photocast
- Quartz Composer
- Shockwave Flash
- Quicktime 7.1.3
- Java Plug-In for Cocoa.

You can check your list of plug-ins under "Help--> Installed Plug-Ins"

Neat - I never knew that.

maybe if a few people posted which plug-ins they have installed an if they are having problems with Safari crashing, we can pin point a troublesome plug-in (if that in fact is the problem) quickly.

I now use Safari 2.0.4 (which I assume is the latest version). Crashes with Safari are extremely seldom - maybe once every few months and I use Safari every day on a wide variety of websites..

Plug-ins are:

Java Plug-in for Cocoa
Shockwave for Director
Adobe Acrobat and Reader Plug-in
Quartz Composer Plug-In
Shockwave Flash 9.0 r19
Shockwave Flash 9.0 r20
QuickTime Plug-in 7.1.3
QuickTime Plug-in 7.1.3
Java Plug-in (CFM)
Java 1.3.1 Plug-in (CFM)
Flip4Mac Windows Media Web Plugin 2.1
Flip4Mac Windows Media Plugin 2.1
Verified Download Plugin
Digital Rights Management Plugin
Java Plug-in

Oddly enough I have a few plug-ins twice, sometimes different versions or slightly different names (like the Flip4Mac one).
Can I just delete the duplicates?

krs, I should have indicated as well - I have duplicate Quicktime and Flip4Mac plug-ins as well.

I wonder what the Digital Rights Management plugin is that you have? That's not an iTunes service plug-in, is it?

M
Mmmmmh...wonder what to do with the duplicates - I guess I'll leave them for now.

As to the DRM plug-in, I have no clue how that ended up on my Mac. I don't listen to any music on this Mac other than what the odd website occasionally provides and I don't use itunes at all.
I have tried umpteen ways to Sunday to play some windows media files that I believe are controlled by DRM, but without any success. I believe it's impossible to play those on the Mac unless you get an Intel one and run XP.
That DRM plug-in has certainly done nothing to help - it's just one item listed under Safari>Help>Plug-ins.

The complete information is:

Digital Rights Management Plugin
Provides support for Digital Rights Management — from file “DRM Plugin.bundle”.
MIME Type Description Extensions
application/x-drm Digital Rights Management

Thanks, Cuba Mark.

I also need to get java,

I had a computer consultant do it for me once, and for some reason I lost it.

I do not know why.

i tried to do it my self and the version it is offering is too new for my

OS 10. 3 .9 so it bogs down.

I cannot find a way to find the right latest version to suit an OS 10. 3. 9.

Help!

I looked at my input managers folder.
There is nothing there. One Unix file, 4K called a "Smart Crash Report"

I switched to Camino sveral months back and put Safari on the backburner for now.
Once Safari 3 is out of Beta, I might consider it.

Safari has been ridiculous lately and I suspect the webkit is mostly to blame.

Switch to Camino - not perfect but a damn sight better than Safari.

re safari problems

Thanks for all the feed back from all of you wondeful people .

I was Google searching for answers (Java for Mac Os 10.3.9 ) yesterday and came across an apple document re Java update that was about Safari quiting and getting disconnected from the net, when Java was installed. That was exactly what I was experiencing.

It gave an update for Java that is supposed to correct that problem.

So I did the procedure.

I have not used Java yet, but I worked on my computer all day and so far nothing bad happened and I had no problems with it quitting.

Prior to this it would quit or disconnect within a couple of hours and very often after .

I will see what the future holds.

Thanks again.
