I just bought a used HP 2500n printer. It has a JetDirect 615n (part number J6057A) 10/100 Base-T ethernet printer server card in it. The previous owner says he always used the USB or Parallel port and never the ethernet connection.
Anyway, I can't get it the JetDirect card to work. My routers status lights don't see it. The JetDirect card appears to have two green LED lights besides the RJ-45 ethernet socket. Neither of them light up with a cable joining the card to my router. I have tried two different ethernet cables. I have tried reseating the JetDirect card many times. I have tried 2 different routers. I have tried lightly scraping the RJ-45 connectors wires clean with a very small screwdriver (yes the card was out of the printer when I did that, and I grounded myself). I tried cleaning the RJ-45 connector with compressed air.
Of course the card might be bad, but something internal in the printer could be off too. The printer seems to work fine using the USB port but I would prefer to use the ethernet port. I have more than one computer and it would be nice to not require a host computer be on whenever you want to print something from any of the computers.
Any ideas? Anyone have an HP printer with an EIO slot I can test the card in ?
Have you tried to print a configuration page to see if that gives any clues?
Press the 'Go' and 'Cancel Job' buttons at the same time to print the page(s). If the card isn't dead, you should get a printer configuration page and a JetDirect page.
Are you sure that the cable you're using is a good one? You might want to try a different cable, just to rule out the possibility.
The two lights are link/activity lights; one each for 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps. One of them should definitely be on if you've got a good link.
I should have said this in the original post. Printing the configuration page shows the EIO slot is empty.
That's not a good sign. Sounds to me like your card is busted or your port connections are shot. Go to www.fixyourownprinter.com and see if they can help too.
I'll see if I can pick up a cheap 10base-T card on e-bay. I don't neeed a 100base-T card (like the possibly damaged one I have) enough to pay $100 US for it.
