Admin account login problems
I have a fairly fresh install of 10.4.3. This morning I accepted an offered download of an OS update, which required a reboot after install. After the reboot, I was unable to login to the one admin account. The login was sucessful but the machine would hang after clearing the login dialog and before changing the screen background and starting Finder. Forcing a power down was the only way out of that.
Logging in to any non-admin account worked normally. I did that and then opened a Terminal window and attempt to su to the admin account. The password was accepted but it hung and never showed a shell command prompt.
Next I started the machine in Safe Mode. This allowed me to login to the admin account but the startup of everything was extremely slow. Then if I tried to make any changes that required authentication I was unable to authenticate using the login for the admin account.
I think the admin account may be corrupted in some way, but am unsure how to proceed. I would like to repair it if possible. Otherwise I may end up doing a full clean install which is a pain.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm very comfortable in a UNIX environment so I'm not averse to doing things on the command line. But I'm new to OS X.
Thanks in advance!
