Color calibration

Has anyone been having troubles with color calibration. I have suffered for three yeasrs with a NEC Crt monitor, which I just changed thinking it was my problem. I just got a Benq 19" LCD, and I run the OS x calibration thing, but I still never seem to have the right look. I either have black text on white look dull out of focus and some times not clear at all, while the photos look smooth and clear, or I get photos the look all blotchy and text that looks wonderful.

Any ideas? I have tried adjusting everything on this thing and it never seems to sort it out. I actually notice a difference after installing tiger. (one thing I check with is the image of the power pc on the apple store page. The top section of the tower always has what looks like a round hole in it. The white relection is always that bright that it burns that shape?)

I hope someone has some sort of answer.
Thanks

Honestly, you can't beat an actual hardware calibrator, though they tend to be quite expensive. But, well worth it, IMO.

However, if you're looking for a few more options than OS X provides in the calibration department.. give Supercal a try. By far the best "Software" calibrator out there for X.

I tried this Supercal thing. If you have used it, you know when you get to a point where there is to be the color on the black screen and you need to adjust until the centre color becomes as close to the outside as possible. Well, I dont even see any color, Its just a blck screen.

If you adjust the slider on the right upwards, you should begin to see the pattern. The point is to try and see the center solid square and not see the rest of the other blocks. Or, as close to that as you can come.

Well you took a big step back going away from the CRT which has far more accurate colour than the Benq.
As far as blacks go - LCDs suck so just skip past the first one on the expert calibration.
You may be able to get close if your reduce the output of each colour way down - perhaps as low as 50%.

Can I ask what kind of room lighting is involved.
Many colour Pros work in very dim lighting and their monitor output looks odd to the unaccustomed eye.

Text and photo are often at odds - try adjusting the Font smoothing in Appearance.

You will find that text will get more crisp at lower brightness/contrast settings. Most are used to over saturated colour on their photos ( TVs too ) and that really makes it hard to get text crisp.

I assume you are using an analogue cable on the Benq??

I figured it out. It has to do with the Display option in the Universal Access. I corrected the white balance in there, then ran the calibration again. Excuse the language, but holly ****. Its like a whole new computer. I dont even know if what Im looking at is right. The side bar in mail is like a baby blue. iTunes has repeating white and blue lines in the library lists? The drop down menus have hairline lines of darker colour? Tiger windows have these hairlines? WOW. it looks good.
I also changed the font smoothing, but that doesnt do much. I left it at automatic.
The LCD does a good job on black. I cant see anythign wrong now.
