Installing OS 9.2 for dual with Tiger on a G4 -> probs! :(

Hi All,

Like the title says, I am trying to install OS 9.2 on our G4 already running Tiger. I just did a clean install for Tiger on our computer (erased everything and started again... but that is another story). I am now trying to get OS9.2 up and running too b/c we have several programs that require an OS9 enviroment to function (no, there are no other updates that allow them to run on 10).

Since it is was a clean install I have several options (e.g. installing Tiger then OS 9.2 or vice versa) however I cannot get any to work. Both OSs have or currently run fine on this computer. When I try to install OS 9 from Tiger (insert disc, click install OS) the computer inexplicably tries to install OS 9 onto the OS disk itself. When I try to modify this option from the classic setting button under Sys Prefs, the two HDs that are on the computer are greyed out and there is no option to install to them.

OTOH, when I boot from the OS9 CD, I can get it to load, but when I go to install it, I have managed to get it as far as the place where it says "updating the hard disk drivers" and it doesnt load anymore (e.g. says ~3min, but I have left it for as long as 30' with no change!). I dont know what to do!

Suggestions?

You can (and should) choose to not update the disk drivers from the OS 9 install. It's under the "options" button as I recall, but it's been a while, so click around and find the option to uncheck the disk driver update.

If the drive is big enough.. I would suggest partitioning it. Although, you'd have to install Tiger again. But, this really is the best way to install Classic. Especially if you're going to be booting from it.

I too have the same problem with a bookkeeper's Mac that requires OS 9 due to the lame, out-of-date accounting app they need to use here that has a module that hasn't yet been updated for OS X.

There has to be a way, once Tiger is installed, to be able to install OS 9.2.1 alongside OS X without having it erase Tiger.

And, as with mrlarouc, we're not looking to boot up from OS 9 so partitioning is not necessary, we just want to be able to launch OS 9 when running and OS 9 app.

My 1.5-year-old Mac G5 at home has both running nicely, but it came that way.

Would love to know the correct answer to this.

You could try installing OS9 to a different drive or partition if you have one available .. then copy the folders across to the existing drive. Just make sure to open up the classic or startup disk control panel after this (so it goes out to scan for OS9 and forces it to be blessed). This should work in theory...

When you install Tiger, and plan to install OS 9 on a 9 bootable Mac, make sure you've selected "Install OS 9 drivers" when you format/partition the drive. On some older(officially unsupported in X) machines, drives should be formatted in OS 9 first, before installing X.

It's been a while since I kicked this dead horse - the G4 that I was hoping to use for this person - but I did manage to get OS 9 on there, it just doesn't work. When starting an OS 9 native app it just freezes.

The OS 9 on my G5 at home is on the same disk, no partitions, it works. Sigh.

Mrlarouc:

You may be interested in the reply I received to my post entitled "Installing Tiger plus OS 9.2.2" in this forum. It is not quite the same problem you have, but perhaps it will give you some ideas.
