iPod won't take downloaded music.... Please help!

I have an old scroll-wheel iPod that I absolutely love. But since we have downloaded iTunes 5.0 it will not update any songs downloaded from the music store. It will take podcasts, and any other music but not downloaded music from iTunes MusicStore. This is obvious somewhat of a pain.

I tried downloading the software update for 2005-09-06 and once it was on my hard-drive I was able to locate it in the utilities folder and select the appropriate updater. But of the two options it gave me (update and restore) I want to update not erase everything on my iPod. But when I click update a window pops up saying 'the updater doesn't have a firmware image'. Does anyone know what this is or what it means?

I would really appreciate it if people could look into it for me. I payed for all the music I downloaded and I want to listen to it on my iPod. But I could not figure out why I was allowed to only update podcasts and other music and not purchased! It wouldn't even let me add songs that I had previously downloaded and already added!

Any help! Please!

I think you should try erasing the iPod. If it has things on it that you don't have elsewhere, extract them first with a program such as iPodRip (available from Versiontracker.com).

The only other thing I can suggest trying first is deauthorizing your computer, then reauthorizing it. I know of no reason why it should have any effect, but you never know...it only takes a moment and might do the trick.

BTW, does the purchased music still play on the computer?

Update your iPod software.

Alright, I've figured that out. I could copy the music onto my iPod that I bought but when I bring it upstairs to my computer, the music won't play. It says I need to authorize it but when I do, it says that the iTunes MusicStore has had an error 403. What does this mean and how do I fix it?

I know the internet is working because I can go onto safari and I can play radio stations but the music store will not open. Any help would be appreciated please!

If you haven't already, try:

Repair Permissions using Disk Utility

Log in as a different user (create a new account if necessary) and see if you have the same problem there. (If the problem does not recur under the new account, then it is specific to your primary user account. Fix by reinstalling iTunes or by migrating to the new account.)

Reinstall iTunes (to an older version if possible, but not below 4.7, which I believe is now the minimum for using iTMS).

Also, I'm a little confused about your setup. Are there two computers or just one? If two, are both running iTunes 5.0? Is there more than one iTMS account in the house?

Alright, I have two computers, both with iTunes 5.0. I'm logged in as the same account on both (at different times obviously). One is a G5 iMac and the other, still going strong, my G3 iMac. I use the G5 for most of things (movies, interenet ect.) and the G3 for projects and mostly text based things. I just wanted to listen to the music I downloaded on the G5 on my G3 (which is in my room). But when I try to authorize the song after copying it onto the G3 via 'jumpdrive' it says there is an error 403.

I hope it helps that I've been a bit more specific. Sorry about that before. Again, I really appreciate your help!

You could try making a .zip of the files on the G5, put that onto the Jumpdrive and then Copy to the G3 and expand there.. Maybe something's going wrong with the transfer itself?

Do you have a "network" option available.. to turn on sharing?

Since the computers are both on the internet that should work...but the "client" machine has to be authorized to play the purchased music. Same problem all over again.
