New Mac Lover with a Superdrive-DVD Question

I just got my new iBook G4 the other week and quickly fell in love with it. I've been asking myself ever since why I've been using a PC for so many years. I put in an extra 512 MB of memory and raised the drive to 80 GB. The default Superdrive is very nice, but I do have a question regarding it that I cannot find anywhere on the 'net.

I have an issue with my DVD Handycam (Sony DCR-DVD201). Sony, unfortunately, decided not to make them Mac-compatible. In order to rip my family and vacation movies through USB, I have to finalize the DVD and then browse the disc to rip it to the desktop, whereas I would then have to use something like Popcorn to burn it back.

Will the Superdrive in the new G4s play the small 9cm DVD discs? Or do I risk screwing up the drive by trying to slide one in, as it is not a shelf-loader?
