Alternative ways of installing OS X on a machine without a DVD drive?

I have a set of Panther DVDs (with a license that is not currently being used on any computer---these are just regular Panther disks, not system specific) and I may be buying an older iBook. If that iBook doesn't have a DVD drive (these Panther discs ARE DVDs) how can I install Panther onto the iBook? I have DVD and CD burning capabilities on the computer I'm on now, as well as an iPod (could I load it from there somehow?). I'm just not sure how to get Panther from the DVDs to a non-DVD playing iBook...any ideas?

You can boot the iBook in target disk mode (boot then press and hold T, firewire symbol pops up)

Then you just load the installer from your machine that has a dvd drive, and reboot. When it comes time to select what disk to install the OS onto, select the iBook.

Works like a charm.

I'll second that! It works perfectly.

one day you'll need to either re-install Panther or upgrade to Tiger and you'll be in this "I need to boot a DVD without a DVD player" quandry again

just buy the 'book that has a DVD player in it and solve your problem for now and future

It takes only 10% of the energy to avert a problem than it does to fix it.

The trouble is that I'm buying used and trying to find the cheapest option possible, which doesn't always have a DVD drive. I only plan on needing it for about a year after which I will sell it to buy the newest possible iBook available at that time, with a full 2 years of Applecare, during which time I will still have my iMac G4 so this will not become an issue ever. I would buy the iBook now, but I would rather have the full 3 years of coverage for while I'm in university, and its really only a small portable solution I need right now.

"It takes only 10% of the energy to avert a problem than it does to fix it."? Maybe so, but it takes 300% the money, and when you're a student working part time, my money is far more difficult to obtain than energy.

hey, that answers my question about slaving the laptop to the desktop.

but, now here's my question, what if the iBook has a DVD drive and not the desktop? and i want to install an os which is on a DVD. then what?

Yes, is there a way to put the data on a regular CD? so that CN can have it anytime she needs? as mac spectrum noted, she might need to re-install sometime...?

I'm not sure how to put it on CDs..

If you want to slave the desktop, it's the same thing.. boot holding T, and it'll go into target disk mode and show up on the iBook. (this is of course with a firewire cable)

Do you really need a portable as of now? You could just hold off until then. If you do however, do the Target mode suggestion, and just load it onto the iBook as if it were another hard drive in your iMac.
