I have started to use Tiger, and I have encountered some problems. One has been sorted out, but I still can't install Palm Desktop software 4.0. Should I install the Tiger .1 upgrade, or should I wait? Other than that, everything seems to work fine.

I would expect the 10.4.1 upgrade is mainly a fix for some of the bugs in Tiger. That being said there is still a problem with at SSH in 10.4.1. I can't log in directly from my Tiger laptop to my Tiger Desktop downstairs. I first have to log into my 10.2.8 based server, and then I can. It worked fine under Tiger a few days ago.
At first I thought something malicious had happened. After all my server is "live" on the internet and it did have an easy to guess password (no longer), so my first guess was someone had gotten onto my network, A search for "SSH Tiger bug" shows up plenty of links with problems with Tigers SSH. People have fixed the problem by installing the SSH subsystem themselves. Using "Fink" is one method. I've done it from source code a couple of years ago on a 10.1.5 system - that's another method.
Do I install OpenSSH from the source code, use Fink, or just wait for 10.4.2 ? It will probably come out the day after I fix SSH.
Anyway, SSH is basic plumbing. It should be at least as reliable as what's available on other Unixes. (plural of Unix ?). That's a BIG SIGN saying Tiger was released way too early.
Cheers - Terry
P.S. I hope and expect 10.4.2 to be a MAJOR bug fix. It should be the version of Tiger that Apple let out of the gates first.
I'm hoping for one particular major fix in 10.4.2.
I've been unable to audio or video chat (I have an iSight) since installing Tiger. Everything worked to perfection with Panther. The Apple Discussion forums are littered with similar tales from people all over the world. I've spent many hours by now with Apple Support, My ISP support guys and one-to-one text and/or phone chats with people very knowledgeable in the areas of iChat and iSight. I've bought a new modem (the other one kicked the bucket when I tried to upgrade its firmware).
As far as I'm concerned now, it's 10.4.2 or an erase and re-install of Panther.
I would definitely install 10.4.1. It has some fixes in it, so why stay with .0?
As for Palm Desktop, make sure you have the latest version from Palm. 4.0 is an older version... they're up to 4.2.1 now. I recently installed 10.4.0 on my parent's G4 and it worked just fine (actually better than panther) with the Palm Desktop v.4.2.1. Since then, I have installed 10.4.1 for them and it's still working 100% OK.
That said, I've been having tonnes of font problems on my G4, as well as apps crashing and other annoying things. I too will move back to panther if these things aren't figured out by 10.4.2.
