Help! - Apple apps not responding on PM

We have a dual G5 PM running Panther. Today some basic Mac apps won't run: Mail, iCal, Address Book, Safari.

Disk Utility will not allow us to repair permissions from the main user's account.

We have a backup, clean account where we can repair permissions, but again, those apps won't open.

Internet explorer works. Adobe apps work.

We have trashed prefs on the relevant apps. THis does not help.

The only thing that has changed recently is that the user added some new Fonts to Font Book. other than that, it was working fine with it's usual workload of Mail, iCal and Adobe CS.

Hope someone can suggest a solution short of re-installing. More than that, I am curious about the cause.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks MacDoc
tried that - no luck

So we went through Font Book and found some fonts that had been disabled. We enabled them and all was OK except Safari, which we had to re-install.
