Thumbs up need advice for a new mac buy

Hello! I am soon buying a new G5 and have some questions I am hoping some can answer? I am new to the modern mac world, I have not upgraded for years!
-Is a RAID array better than using single drives? How reliable is that system? Is there more of a chance of drive failure or errors? How important is it for speed improvement? Will RAIDs work well with OSX classic mode?
-how much of a performance difference will there be between the current, (or now discontinued) G5 dual 1.8...and the new G5 dual 2.0 ?
-it is true the G5 towers must use only paired RAM?

Thanks!

RAID comes in many configurations.
Two of the more common ones are RAID0 and RAID1.
They have pros and cons.
RAID0 (you may see striped array or set) is two drives acting as one. This will increase performance but will only be as reliable as the disks you are using. Meaning that if one disk goes bad, you loose all information.

RAID1 is mirroring the infomation on both drives. You have redundancy but with little or no performance enhancement.

Implementation of RAID can be done by software or by hardware.

A close friend had a first revision Dual 2, and later got a dual 1.8, and he does a lot of heavy Photoshop work. He said that the difference between the two was pretty much zero. Of course the dual 2 is going to test out as faster, but in everyday use, it's just not an issue in his mind.

What I'm not sure of is... are there differences between the original dual 2 and the dual 2's just announced yesterday? I thought I noticed a change from 8 RAM slots to 4, not sure about that though. The new dual 2 may be somewhat different from the past 2 GHz machines.

MacDoc, any thoughts?

Pretty much zero sums it up.
RAM and RAID and perhaps a hot video card will make more of a day to day difference than 10% bus/processor.
