I noticed that when I start my iBook after shutdown, it seems Apple application won't launch and they hang with a perpetually spinning beachball. Safari, Mail, and even DiskUtility. I'm using FireFox right now to type this.
The interim fix is running FSCK at startup, but if I shutdown again the problem reappears. If I leave the laptop running (sleep) it never returns... I don't know if I want to do that.
wierd. are you still running 10.3.8 as per your sig or did you install .9?
have you repaired permissions yet? run onyx and clear all caches (via onyx)?
i'd say it was ram except you say it only happens after a shutdown, which places it firmly into the wierd category. i had similar symptoms when i installed some bad ram in my ibook, except it affected all apple apps + photoshop, and it was fixed temporarily by a restart.
It happened pre OS 10.3.8 as well as 10.3.9, I've run Cocktail regularly (once a week -- I'd do it once a month, but there is no option to do so) and I've repaired permissions once I can get DiskUtility to work (after FSCKing) and it continues to act the same upon shut-down, and booting.
It is weird, but thankfully I still have a year and a half of Applecare, if it comes to that. I was thinking of doing a OS reinstall... but I did one last summer.
When I get home tonight I'm going to do run everything: FSCK, Cocktail, and repair permissions and see what happens then, after a shutdown (and wait a couple of minutes.)
I'd recommend an Archive & Install as well.. it doesn't take much time and you can either rule out your operating system is whacky, or, if it doesn't fix the issue, come to the conclusion that your operating system has nothing to do with the issue.
