Until a few months ago I was strictly a PC user but have recently switched to only using my girlsfreinds 700 MHz iMac G4 with a 15" flat panel display at home, which she uses for graphic designing. After playing around with it for a while, I've come to the conclusion that she desperately needs a RAM upgrade. From what I've read, There are 2 RAM slots. One takes 168 pin PC133 RAM while the other takes what looks like the equivalent of laptop RAM (SO-SDRAM, or something like that). What I was wondering is can I buy any 168 pin CAS3 PC133 SDRAM or not? Also, what is the max amaount of RAM each slot can support?

I am trying to mimize cost here and it appears that RAM intended for PCs would be cheaper than that specifically design for a MAC. BTW, I'm running OS 10.3.8 if that makes any difference (actually I;ve heard this OS is very picky when it comes to RAM, so I guess it does).

You are right. 10.3 is fairly pick when it comes to ram. Most PC133 ram will work but make sure you can return it in case. Once word of caution though. Installing into the 168 pin slot is no piece of cake. You should re-apply thermal grease to the processor when you put it back together or your processor could overheat fairly quickly. We've had more than a few do-it-yourselfer's bring their iMac's in with dead processors because of this.

The iMac will accept 512MB sticks in both slots.
