I've opened my 3G iPod a few times and here's the trick ... if you can salvage the plastic tools you'll need them. Place the iPod face down on a hard surface (if you are afraid of scratching the front face put a tissue between it and the table - but nothing thick). Placing it near the edge of the table press firmly but forcefully with your thumb in the middle of the iPod's back (in the center, use the Apple Logo as reference). You will see the iPod's silver back seperate from the plastic front, insert the tool to keep it from combining again, turn, press and seperate the other side. Once you have the tools in boths sides, work carefully from the front to rear and the silver back will work it's way off the front. Be very careful at the end as the firewire ribbon cable is fragile and can be easily torn. I haven't had a chance to look but I belive there is detailed instructions to do this at the ipodlounge.com
