Adobe Streamline/OS X work-around?

anyone know of a way to convert raster to vector without using Streamline (since the last time Adobe updated it was in the mid-90s)? this is the only thing i miss about OS 9.

any help would be appreciated. thanks!

That is the only reason why I still have OS9 on my machine. I did hear some chick on Your Mac Life talking about streamline a while back. She said that this feature had been incorporated into illustrator but I don't know what the F he was talking about cause I cand find it.

If you have Adobe Illustrator, you can use it's build in tracing function.

(It's called the Auto Trace Tool - next to the blend tool)

Thats a very weak substitute. Streamline allows you to take a full folour image, disignate the number of colours you want to end up with, and creates a vector path for each colour. It was a very cool tool and I have no idea why adobe killed it.

There is a program/plug-in called Silhouette. I've used the demo. It works really well, but it seems kinda pricey. I've heard rumours that the next version of Illustrator might incorporate Streamlines functions.
BTW: Illustrators autotrace functions are nowheres near as good as what Streamline provided.

yeah, and Streamline kinda sucked at that. i mean, it worked; you knew what it was going to do. a tool. but by '98 i thought it was odd that there was still that stupid train on the start-up splash. what was this company thinking? certainly not of us!

anyway, before this turns into an Adobe-bash, i'd really love to know what the rest of you are doing, and even find a way. you can export paths from photoshop, but of course, as was mentioned here, you lose control when there are multiple colours at play.

are we just not converting to vector anymore people?!? for shame!

Yes Vector as much as possible!
(and trying to use the least amount of points - not like what I see coming from young pups....)
