Red face my airport card!! argghhh

my first Post!!!
can anyone please help me, i got an ibookabout six months ago from applestore. everything was perfect, works like dream until christmas, my girlfriend bought me an airport extreme card and i installed it. it seemed to work (it turned on in the task bar etc) even though i didnt have a wireless network to try it out on until i got back to university.
unfortunately my problems started here as i had problems turning it on, i couldnt do it by clicking on the icon menu on the task bar, however i could indirectly by using airport manager or selecting the 802.1x section of internet connect. i am not sure wether this is turning it on or that my mac is just confused (more likely i am).
now i doesnt seem to turn on at all. any help would be very much appreciated as i cant afford to send it off for repairs right now!!!

BTW
my ibook is the 12 inch 1ghz one, i havent fiddled with the insides except for airport card

the first thing I would do is re-seat the airport card to insure that it's connected properly. And make sure that the little antenna connector is clicked in properly, that can seem like it's in, but not properly "clicked" in.

The computer's still under warranty, so you shouldn't have to worry about repair costs. I know that (at least with the extended coverage) Applecare "also covers ...an AirPort Card... that you own and use with the covered computer." (Hopefully there's not a loophole in that awkward wording...).

Try opening your Network control panel, and seeing what it says about your Airport connection. A working connection (and one that's connected to a network) shows up green. An installed card that can't find a network shows up yellow. If it isn't showing up at all, there may be something wrong with the card.

If it is showing up, make sure it's the first item in the list (you can drag it to the top, above modem and ethernet) then try selecting it and clicking "configure," or choosing "Airport" from the "Show:" pulldown menu. You can then make it choose a specific network or try and connect automatically (it may be trying to automatically connect to a network like 'default' or something that doesn't even exist). Maybe also make sure your network is broadcasting an SSID, so it can be detected by the airport client.

Just don't blame your girlfriend. That's a cool gift.

I recently solved my airport card problems by downloading the latest Airport software, 4.1.
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...formacosx.html
I don't have an Aiport hub, I use a D-Link wireless router, but it seems to have fixed my connecting problems I've been having since upgrading to Panther recently.

I started with this page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106858
