Wireless and upgrade questions

I'm within a week or two of buying a 12" iBook which I want to connect to my printer and the internet wirelessly. I want to use my existing G4 400 as a file server of sorts. What I want in the end is to have the G4 contain all media and work files (my wife uses lots of Word docs that change every hour and every day). I want it to be seamless in the sense that I can grab the iBook and take it away from home and my wife can still do her work on the most recent files and vice versa. I want the iBook to be able to access the files off the G4 for use. I will eventually get a hard drive for backups. And I want this to work wirelessly. I was recently told that I could get a Linksys WRT54G instead of the Airport base station. I thought that was great since it seems they can be picked up for about a third the cost of the Airport.
Anyone have any input or suggestions about this set up?

The external wireless adapters like LinkSys, D-Link and Netgear (I have the latter) all have easy-to-use menu-driven setups that should get you connected without any difficulty. Just follow the instructions that came with your router. Good luck!

I'm in a similar situation. I fried my ancient SMC wireless router on the weekend so now I'm looking for options - preferably cheap but still usable. Any suggestions would be appreciated, and I'll post here if I find good options.

I also have an old Sawtooth that I use as a server of sorts. I surf on my TiBook but use the big drives in my desktop to hold music, video, etc. Using iTunes music sharing works fine (I plug my TiBook into the home stereo and stream the music). The only annoyance is that play counts aren't updated when you stream (very minor) and you can't use features like Party Shuffle (much more annoying). Video streaming over Airport does not work for me, but that's likely because TiBook wireless is terrible compared to modern laptops. Streaming over ethernet works fantastic.

Any file synchronization I do is manual. There are third party apps that profess to keep folders in sync, but I haven't taken the time to give them a try. However, I know that OSX 10.4 is supposed to have a lot of new iSync features, including the ability to share Mail folders across computers. It sounds very promising.

Good luck, and I'd be curious to hear how it turns out for you.
