How to download years of email files?

A good friend just died at his office desk. A HUGE shock to his family and friends. :verysad:
We worked on several community volunteer projects together. One of them involved government grant reporting with financial statements. His daughter was able to download and give me relevant folders, mostly MS Word and PDF files.

But she doesn't know how to do that for his emails. He used a Windows Outlook(?) email.
What should she look for to be able to download emails over the past few years, so I can read them on my Mac OS?

my first thought was to pair the computer to a cloud account you control

I use all Apple so I have an iCloud account. There is OneDrive from Office also. Allows you to backup to that account easily. I use a Gmail email - I sync that to my iPhone, Laptop and iMac at home. Is the email address on the computer a public one or private URL? Do you have the password to that account? If yes log into that email from your computer and maybe the emails are in the Cloud so to speak

ChilBear,
I have a Mac. He used Windows.
His email is [email protected]
So, do I set up an account on the cloud or would his widow do that so we both can access?
I'd like to keep this as simple as possible as the family is still in mourning.
Thanks

Still hoping others have suggestions how to do this? There are 100s of emails. The daughter has given me screenshot of all the mail folders her dad had. Some would be more relevant than others. Is there any way to download a specific folder?

Have you tried logging into the account from your Mac - what do you see? Are the emails on the mail server or downloaded to the person's PC?

does this Support post help you? https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204087

ChilBear,
Can you explain that to me, please? His laptop is with his daughter in another town that I can't get to.
HIs email account is [email protected]. Different than mine.

Not sure how @msn.com emails work, but currently with Office 365 everything is also in the cloud before downloading to Outlook, also synced to the cloud.

If they do not mind you have access to the email account they could give you the login in details and you can log and add his account to your mail program. You might need his phone though for verification. I know every time I set my work email through Office 365 I get a text to verify it is me and need to enter that code in the new device to authorize it.
