Scanner issue with Catalina - Brother MFC-74670DN

Stupid Brother has not updated their scanner drivers for this printer to Catalina. So, Catalina can see the printer and print, but cannot see the scanner. So, no scanning possible!!!

And their website just blandly says their scanner drivers do not work with Catalina with no mention as to whether it will ever be updated or not. Same goes for their "Control Centre" application - is only 32-bit with no mention as to whether it will be updated.

I am now goinr to try the Brother forums to see if anyone else uses this same printer on Catalina and whether there's any discussion at all about this. And, knowing my history, I am sure I will be the one and only person in the world with this combo of Mac with the 7460DN.

Cheers

TiltAgain, Two questions:

1/ Will Catalina's built-in ImageCapture scanning software work?

2/ Have you checked out VueScan? I checked their list of Canon printers, and yours isn't specifically listed in their compatibility list, but it's worth downloading and testing. The developer is also insanely good at adding new drivers based on customer feedback. VueScan has been my scanning software of choice for many years now.

The issue, CM, is that Image Capture (and Preview) do not even see the scanner. As far as Catalina is concerned, I do not have a scanner at all, I only have a printer, full stop.

If macOs recognises the scanner, then Image Capture and Preview would be able to see it and scan.

And if macOs cannot see it, nor can any other app, VueScan or others.

Anyway, there's light on the horizon - Brother have just yesterday released updated drivers for printer and scanner for Catalina.

Cheers

That's interesting and sounds may be hopeful, but in actual fact, Apple is supposed to be the one who updates and supports any needed printer scanning software.

Unfortunately Apple doesn't even support their old supported printer scanner page properly and is not updating it or provide anything to replace it.

You seem to be getting a few strikes against you with the installation of Catalina, so if you get much more that doesn't work I would sure be considering going back to at least Mojave or earlier.

Lots of web pages with a instructions of how to do so and it seems a lot of new users are also doing so, especially after being quiet P'd Off with Apples latest macOS 15 Catalina version.

Actually Brother is one of the better printer scanner and Mac software companies and are usually right up-to-date.

EDIT:
I could only find information on their product number which was the closest I could find MFC-7460DN, but its software for OS X 10.15 was released 09/27/2019
https://support.brother.com/g/b/down...n_all&os=10060

I'm not sure that's exactly or close to the same mobile as yours or not.

Oh, I have not updated my main Mac to Catalina yet - it's only my spare laptop that has ben updated as a test case - which is when I discovered that the scanner was no longer supported. My main machine is still on Mojave until I test the updated Brother drivers on the spare laptop.

And yes, the link you posted are the updated drivers

Yes, one would certainly expect Apple to be the ones providing updated drivers to supported peripherals, wouldn't one!

Cheers

Probably a damn good idea numbers updating to Catalina from what I have read, many forums are posting users with all kinds of troubles and other stating it is becoming known as the Apple OS upgrade from hell.

They don't seem to be doing very well with their OS upgrades lately.

Anyway, no such problems here has my old 2011 iMac can only run High Sierra as the latest and I don't even have it installed.

Have you tried installing the new latest Brother software scanner/printer drivers and do they work with Catalina on your Mac laptop???

As I said, Brother is usually a pretty good and up-to-date withMac support and software, and usually supports older Hardware longer than a lot of other manufacturers do.

I am now back on Mohave, Catalina borked both my colour and b&w printers and my scanner, all of which worked in Mohave. Biggest problem now is that all my documents created in Pages will no longer open as in the process of upgrading, I lost my clone backup (my fault, long story) and time machine is no help as it upgraded all Pages documents. Now I have at least three months of Pages stuff to try and recreate. Apple sure has pissed off a lot of people with this totally unnecessary file method change. They are nuts.

Can't you just go back and use Time Machine backup just prior to installing Catalina?? I thought that was one of its advantages, or has Apple screwed it up as well???

Good to hear.

At least you have something working with the latest Mac OS 15 Catalina which is a lot better than some users seem to be experiencing.
