Thanks, Polywog. It will be interesting to see what processes are being so 'grabby' with my external SD card. Oddly enough, it doesn't exhibit this behaviour with an SD card plugged directly into my iMac, but does for the mini-SD card plugged into my card reader.

That is curious. Wonder if the card reader has installed some sort of kernel extension, or hidden startup application. It could be for example, if there is something specific to the card reader installed, that it tries to index the contents of the card, but hasn’t finished when you try to eject.
I hate it when a post doesn't take so will try posting this little FWIW again.
I have two computers one running Snow Leopard, the other ElCap. I have disabled Stoplight on both computers and have never enabled TimeMachine. All of my externals dismount instantly, unless I have failed to close an app that was using a file from that external.
Not sure if one of those two Apple Wünderkinder could be causing the issue, but I would not completely discount the possibility.

Bill C-51 is an act of Terrorism! It cannot be fixed and should be immediately repealed!
I'll probably forget to actually use it next time I might need to, but would be interesting to know what is holding up the trash can from being emptied every once in awhile when it happens I know Associated program is running.
Just a minor Finder burp I would think when it happens, it's got a lot of stuff to do and probably just gets confused.
