I want to upgrade my current DVD-RW (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104 Rev. A227). It takes forever to burn a DVD and is VERY picky on what type of DVD disk it will write to so I figured it's time to look into something better ...

CDW is selling a LaCie 8X DVD+-RW Dual Layer Internal IDE for $169.23 - is this a good deal? and is it bootable?

I got a Pioneer DVR-107 8X DVD+/-RW (Black) OEM for $125.00 at Canada Computers. And now, it's going for $115.00!

Go for it!

(or, you can get it for for $109.00 (white) at this small PeeCee joint in midtown Toronto where I bought my LCD displays)

Can any Mac retailers meet that price?

Sorry! I thought I included the URL with my post

It's recently been renamd from Cybrain to PCCOM. It's a wee shop at Bathurst and Glencairn. Raymond and Jennifer are the owners (certainly Raymond is and they appear to me to be husband and wife).

here's their website:
http://pccom.ca/

Damn good prices!

Thanks for the location information, I live on Roselawn west of Bathurst and it's great to find a reasonably priced store nearby.

Does it "play nice" with the Apple software? Is it bootable?

I just bought an LG 8x DVD +/- from BB for $159 - $60 rebate. I had a hella time trying to find a DVR107 since they are being phased out. The dvr108's were also not available yet from MostlyDigital (London Mac Reseller) so I took the BB route.

Works great - you just need to install PatchBurn II driver for panther to recognize burning.

Thank you thank you thank you - for the patchburn mention. I got the LG about a month or two back and haven't had much time to play with it. I HAVE, however, had no luck with dvdsp and finder burns. Does patchburn have anything to do with dvdsp - or am i having bad luck? thanks again!!! i'm gonna go read up now.

I have done research on possible "superdrive" candidates, and have ordered the DVR-108 made by Pioneer.

It supports Dual-Layer media, and writes to +- Single-Layer media at a maximum of 16X. The price is right at $145.00, and SL writing is supported in all iApps with the use of Patchburn 2.

Although DL writing isn't officially supported by Apply apps yet, Toast 6 Titanium will recognize the DVR-108 and DL writing is possible.

Some users have reported great success with creating DVD-9 in DVD Studio Pro 3 and then using Toast to burn the full 9.4 GB DL media.

If anyone is interested, I can provide a hands-on summary on Tuesday as my drive will be available for pick-up by then.
