Upgrading RAM in 21.5" 2012 iMac

I was led to believe from all I read that the 21.5" 2012 iMacs are not RAM upgradeable and erroneously thinking on my part, that maybe the RAM was soldered to the logic board, but I now see that it is possible, even if difficult and a big PITA to do so:

I guess I and a client are wondering if it would be worthwhile to do the upgrade. She does a lot of video and graphics work and CD/DVD creating burning. And yes she bought the Apple external burner.

She was able to buy the last iMac available in Victoria at the end of January when her older iMac went kaput (logic board) but it only came with the 8GB RAM.

So far she's managing but is wondering if having more RAM installed would be worth while and maybe get some speed improvement.

It looks like I could manage the task, but would it really be worthwhile to do so is our question.

Watch Activity Monitor to see if more RAM would help. Nothing else to it. If you're getting page outs, you'll benefit from more RAM.

You'd want to pay a Service Provider to do the RAM upgrade.

Thanks, and I've suggested that she keep an eye on Activity Monitor, and only very small amount of page outs and only occasionally.

She went for SL 10.6.8 to the mandatory ML 10.8.2 of course, and had to upgrade some software apps, but says it just doesn't seem as fast for what she does compared to her old iMac.

Have you done a RAM upgrade on one of those 21" 2012 iMacs?? I looks like maybe a two hour job or more.

More to the point it would certainly void the warranty.
It may be more cost effective in the long run to sell it and get a 27" unit with RAM upgradeable to 32 GB. Not short term cost, but long term value.

Thanks CR, good points but she definitely did NOT want one of the 27" iMacs which I had suggested, as well getting as a Quad-core Intel Core i7, but there was virtually no stock of any iMac at the time, not even refurbished, besides the fact that she just didn't want to have to wait.

I guess she would/could have eventually had to get a different variation model if she hadn't picked up the last iMac in Victoria that was available at the time and without any waiting. ;)

Not sure about later warranty issues or problems unless some components were damaged during any such RAM upgrade, but too soon to know at this point of time. But I do know that some local Apple Authorized Service places are basically refusing to do such an upgrade on such a working 21" 2012 iMac model.

What does she do with the iMac?

I believe her main upgraded third party apps that she uses mainly is a disk version install upgrade for her Photoshop Elements from her old version 4 to the newer 11 version. That's what she wanted to stick with.

Besides her normal email and browsing, she creates a lot of CD or DVDs videos from her movie and digital cameras for all the FlyBall stuff she and her flyball dog club members do.

I'll need to check what other apps she might be using to create the videos and CD/DVDs, unless one can possibly do it all within Photoshop Elements, then that's probably what she would be using.
