Smile PowerMac G4 Dual 800w/Studio Display [SOLD]

[SOLD]

For sale is a good condition PowerMac G4 Dual 800 Mhz.

Let's start off with the specs:

Dual 800Mhz PowerPC G4
Dual Layer 20x DVD Burner
896 MB RAM
GeForce4MX 64MB Graphics card
250MB Zip Drive

80GB Primary HDD and 30GB Secondary HDD (30GB makes the kind of old-hard drive noise but functions perfectly, it's an Apple original HDD for this machine), can replace it with a newer 40GB one for $20 extra or 120GB for $35 extra.

17" Studio Display LCD with original box.

Mac OS X Leopard on 80GB, can install Tiger or OS9 on the 30GB one if needed.
AirPort (Rare!, $60 value)

Great system, functions perfect, not slow! Can run multiple applications at once without a problem, and is great to edit video on (SD video obviously, not HD video) if you install Final Cut Express on it. (Not included) Will support up to FCE 3.5 with no problem, 4.0 can run but you'll need to hack it to install and you'll need 1GB of RAM (not needed with hack, since it's only 128 MB, Apple seems to only want to use even "RAM" numbers in products)

Pickup in Barrie, Ontario, payment by cash on pickup or PayPal in advance of pickup.

Price is:

$450.00 No Tax

Could I run Final Cut Pro 5 on this machine?
I'm not incredibly familiar with the PowerPC models.

Also, would you be willing to haggle down to $350ish?

You could probably run it with this hack, Apple seems to want to slim down on requirements but it would work much better than a 867Mhz single processor machine.

Install Final Cut Pro on PCI/Pre-G4 Macs

What are your needs for this particular Macintosh? Is it going to be a main editing machine (since FCP 5 doesn't work on intel Macs) or just secondary?
I have no experience with FCP 5 but I have run FCE 3 on this and it runs like a dream.

Sorry, but I can't go lower than $450. I've spent a lot of money to get the optical drive fixed (original was broken) and the AirPort card fitted, as well as a graphics card upgrade. $350 would pretty much mean losing money on my end.

Okay, that's cool. I just like to haggle a little bit.
I'll be using it mainly for Adobe Flash CS3 and internet browsing and stuff. But there still is a good chance I'll be using it for video editing on the side.
Also, I looked on the Apple website, the Leopard requirements state G4 (867 GHz+) supported, does Leopard run because it's dual CPU?
I'll have to speak with my father about this, he may be willing to go split with me, but he may just want to go split with me on a new one this christmas (he doesn't 100% trust used machines, being PC people until about 05 my family don't know old macs run great).
I am however confident that this mac would run at least decently, I have a friend with an old iMac G3 300 Mhz and it runs better than my schools computers (Did I mention my school computers are 2 years old?)

Almost forgot, what is the airport? 802.11 A, B, or G?

I understand It runs great, I'm not sure if it's normal but it's a bit louder than my desktop PC, probably because of the gigantic fans inside. I have not experienced any kernel panics other than one, when I tried installing some PC NTFS driver so I could use a PC-NTFS formatted hard drive which the Mac can't read right out of the box.

I actually had to hack Leopard to get it to install, again, it's the way Apple packages their products, for example, if on the bottom it said: Dual 800Mhz or Single 867Mhz it would probably take up more space and cause some confusion and they probably don't want people running on 800Mhz iMac G4s due to something with the hardware. It's quite complicated but Apple has reasons for whatever they do.

I've never run Flash on it but Photoshop CS (the original CS version) ran fine. I'm confident it should run well. I don't want you to be disappointed if it doesn't run well. I can try running Flash CS3 to make sure though, just give me a day or two and I'll have a go at running Flash CS3.

Since it has an older AirPort card, unfortunately it's limited to B signals. However, if you have Ethernet it can go up to Gigabit speeds. You can get a PCI Airport Extreme compatible card off eBay, if you choose to buy the Mac you could sell the AirPort card in it and get an AirPort extreme compatible PCI card, like this one:

Apple AirPort Extreme PCI WiFi Wireless Card 54M - (eBay.ca item 180328872345 end time 16-Mar-09 12:06:46 EDT)

Its right at the requirements, does it run pretty fast under leopard? If FCE runs like a charm under Leopard then I guess yes, right?

Also, just curious..
do you attend Allan Drive Middle School? If so, I envy you, SCDSB has no middle schools. I'm in 8th grade and I'm in Elementary, I moved here 3 years ago and I was boggled!

It's a bit over the requirements, actually, if you look at the benchmarks it reaches quite a high score. I forgot to say, FCE was under Tiger with nothing on it, but I'd doubt it would be any different with Leopard. It seems to be just as fast as Tiger on this machine. I used it as my main computer for just under a year but I finally decided it was time for an upgrade, it didn't necessarily cut it for what I was doing (many apps open and Photoshop work) but it certainly did hold up well under heavy load. It can seriously do some heavy work, I even made a video on YouTube about it (kinda made it private for now)-I opened up like 20 apps and a game and it switched through them with minimal effort.

However, I would not recommend this for much gaming, the crappy GeForce4 MX isn't really enough for that, but it can do everything other than that. Animations are smooth so it holds well for everything except gaming. Video editing will be fine. It did run X-Plane fine, though, but Halo was choppy.

I don't attend Allan Drive, the sig was just an old link I found with something cool-probably doesn't work anymore-I also attend Elementary school-maybe we're really close for some reason... lol

Sorry man, I just looked up the system requirements for flash CS3 and it won't be able to run (the only g4 it seems it can run on is an upgraded G4 or a MDD), so unfortunately I've lost interest in the computer. But good luck in your search for a buyer!

- Ryan
P.S, are you advertising on different sites such as kijiji? The average person will not have very demanding needs, so this computer would be perfect for them.
