All messages read after you leave

I did a search but couldn't find this so I have to ask:

Can the forum be changed so that all messages are NOT marked as read automatically if you leave the forum or even if you happen to open a link and browse another site for a period of time. I much prefer the feature in other forums that messages are not marked read unless I read them or use the mark read features within the forum interface.

This is particularly annoying when I read a thread that I get from a Twitter message from the Mayor. I will usually be reading Twitter, click his link, go back to Twitter and then come and read the thread. At that point all messages in the forum will be marked as read.

The FAQ even says this is possible:

"The administrator can also set up the forums so that each thread you read is marked in the database. If this option is set, then new threads (or threads with new posts) will not be marked as read until you have actually read them.

There is a built-in time limit to this, however, that will automatically mark all threads as 'read' after a set number of day, whether you really have read them or not. The default setting is 10 days, but the administrator could make this higher or lower."

I would like this on with the 10 day limit. That would seem to be ideal to me.

Thanks,
Norm

+1!
I strongly agree -- I would much prefer for the "Unread" flag to be persistent, or at least that it last a lot longer than it does now!

Still wondering. Mister Mayor, your thoughts?

Send a message via AIM to ehMax
ehMac has been working towards moving to new forum software which will be happening soon. That software will have it's own way of handling unread content that I wouldn't be surprised if it was better.

We'll do tweaking of features once we've moved over to that platform.
