What might be the easiest solution code wise is to have it so you can't post in the classifieds until you've reached the first "milestone" as a forum member (which is usually set in the forum software and at around 50 posts). 50 is a lot of posts for spammers to try and pull off in the forum before they can post a scam/spam ad .. rasies the bar too high for them.

Also as we saw recently the spam isn't so much a problem inside the forum, and for 50 of them to slip by un-noticed just to get to post a spam in the classifieds is pretty unlikely.

The MOST important I think is that for spam/scams/people that are abusing things, there really needs to be a "report" button to flag any comment, posted items, or a user to a mod to investigate. That would still let the community help weed out the undesirable stuff without having to setup more mods.

Lastly my thoughts on the fee for posting, I'm not a big fan of this approach. It will scare away more traffic than any of the other options and it would be great to get the classifieds humming again.

Just a whacky idea

All new posts/classifieds etc etc will be entered into s New Single post for new Members, once the new member receives a set limit of positive feedbacks are can be verified by a mod / sponsoring member / honorable Citizen, then they just stay in the New Member area if they want full access buy a Membership or earn it.

Just a thought

I think the forum is big enough that it can stand the hit of losing new people that do not want to participate long enough to 'earn' some sort of credit that allows them to post items for sale.

The problem with the scammers is that 'some' of them look legit and those are the problem ones, you go through a process only to have it die after a week of jerking around with what you think is a real ad. The guys that post up the MBP's for 500.00, well they are just amusing.

I say that ya you have to be here for x amount of time before you can post items for sale. I also think that for those that cause problems such as backing out of a deal because someone else contacts you and offers 20 bucks more. You forfeit classifieds privileges for 6 months, hell screw that, you're banned for 6 months.

There should definitely be a level system for members I think. Limiting certain rights and such.

I belong to another forum for photography (fredmiranda.com) that had a massive overhauling of it's classifieds a few months back. They were overrun with questionable ads, unwanted comments, and overall misuse (although a fantastic place to find used photo equipment).

They are run as forum style allowing for posting and one a day bumps as well as other users commenting (positively or marking it as in interested or other). The rule is to make deals and comments through email or PMs although some are posted. The moderator will delete or modify posts that don't meet the rules but not to often - Fred Miranda is a very busy profession photographer and I doubt he hangs around his site reading all posts to his forums. Solid rules and self-policing make this a nice site to visit.

The classifieds were changed to PayPal subscription service - paying a one-time small fee to post any ad (WTB, FS, Auction notice (off line), WTT, etc.) or a larger fee for a whole year. I reluctantly paid the larger fee for the one year subscription because at $30US it was less than half the fees eBay would have charged me for listing and selling the one lens I was looking to sell at the time. Now that I have used it more than a few times, the fee was well worth the price paid.

Only the Subscribers are allowed to make new threads in the classified section no matter what for - buying, selling or trading. Everyone else can only post replies in existing ads (but only in the classifieds, the rest of the site is free). You have to make payment through PayPal with a verified address and a matching email address to cut down on possible fraud and to allow for the admins of the site to protect buyers and sellers from attempted fraud by being able to trace thread starters. Scam posts basically disappeared overnight from the site.

There was a super large stink about this, members threatened to leave, never to post again. Classified traffic died down for a few weeks but today it's just a busy as ever. Threads are usually in the archives within 1 week (and 100 over pages down the list) - where in ehMac I just noticed that a car I was trying to sell in the spring (long sold but not through ehMac) was still only a few pages back in the sub-section it was listed in - not too much traffic there.

If ehMac changed back to the forum style and decided to charge a subscription service, I probably would reluctantly subscribe (depending on the fee of course). But I also know that scam ads would be a thing of the past within minutes of the change. ehMac used to have a very busy classified section, but I don't bother trying to sell here anymore - if I do, I'm lucky if I get one reply (and that reply is usually the super low-baller looking to get something for free)

Here's to change - hope it works

I meant to add that yes I would pay and I think there could be three levels.

1. ehMac already has Sponsoring Members, their payment should include starting new threads to the Classifieds.

2. An annual fee (say half of the Sponsoring Member fee) that allowed for posting new threads in the Classifieds.

3. A fee for one time posting of a for sale thread (say one half yet again).

Only paying subscriptions get to post new threads - all other just get to post in existing threads.

I am comfortable paying for a service that I perceive to have value to me - I used to buy and sell more than a my fair share here until the switch to the new style classifieds. Now I will list and browse only occasionally - considering a blatant scam post(s) is still on page one after a week (why it's still there is a unknown too), shows the amount of new traffic to the classifieds has petered to minimum levels.

You are to get flamed for this decision, but if you do it right buyers and sellers will come back - but right now the classifieds are on their last breathe

Well I am seeing some posts by jetkingrose that are repeats of someone else's post. This looks like a scheme to get around the concept of only allowing people to access the classified after so many posts.

Interesting!

I just saw a post by jetkingrose that just says "No thankx" but there was no previous post where that comment would have made sense.

Another thing ehMac could think about is adding a "Report this Post" button which I have seen on some other forums.

I've seen a few posts by this person and it's just a repeat of a past post. Now I see he is posting in 5 different threads and if you search the thread you'll find that he is just repeating someones post and all around 5:30 am today.

Do you really think that user would hit 50 posts before getting removed though? That's a lot of forum posts to make so you can go make a spam post ... if they could easily post in the forums in an automated way they would be posting their spam there instead of the classifieds.
