School Shootings: An American Passtime

It happened again, this time it was a female and with only female victims.

Just finished watching it on CNN, not even 10 minutes ago.

Police: Female student kills 2 others, self at Louisiana college - CNN.com

I know that the gun litterally hasn't even cooled yet but seriously guys... Gun control.

Tell me what you think.

(Also i realise the title may be aggressive, however it is nil compared to the outcome when you give the most patrioticly aggressive people in the world freedom to own various weapons you can't be in a constant state of surprise and sympathy when they use them)

I guess you are too young to know much about the Montreal Massacre.

It isn't necessarily a particularly American thing.

I am aware that there are other school shooting in different countries, including ours. I know all about the Montreal Massacre aswell as shootings even before my parents were conceived (which were untelevised), age is not a factor in knowledge. There have been 39 American televised school shootings since 1969, i do not think for a second that justification can be blunted by 'Well other countries do it too'

Protip: Weapons used in Montreal Massacre were American made.

I consider school shootings an American passtime because they simply outnumber school shootings in any other country, i also consider the reasoning behind this to be based on poor gun laws and extremely violent influences (not talking about videogames, i'm talking about a history of extremely violent government).

No, I agree. But what happened in Montreal was horrendous and it ranks right up there as one of the most hideous shooting massacres in recent North American history. This is not a pissing contest, just a comment that homicidal gun nuts are not limited to south of the border.

Oh okay my apologies if i came off as a dick.

I am just dumbfounded if people claim that there is no problem with gun control and that it is 'their freedom' or 'our freedom as Americans'.

There have been 7 school shootings in Canada since the first in 1975, and 10 Worldwide excluding U.S and Canada EVER in the history of the world.

U.S: 39
Canada:7
Rest of the World:10

Give the U.S half a year and they will have outgunned the rest of the world 4 times over in school shootings.

France, China and Russia are 3 of the prime gun exporters (exluding U.S) in the world yet you don't see them killing each other at such a rate... just something to consider.

I firmly believe that as people are brought up they take influences from everywhere. I can only imagine being brought up as a typical suburban American kid being pumped full of fear by Religion, Government, Advertisements and General Media... all with access to any Weapon of my choosing.

It is just that CNN has so much time to fill up, they will cover everything. Think about it, they are on 24 hours a day, everyday, to cover what CITY-TV covers in under an hour...

Americans also have a few pastimes that lead to such events: a strange fondness for gun ownership (because you never quite know when King George will send the troops back to regain Boston); and going postal (because Americans are mostly interbred idiots, as one may see on Dr. Phil, Jerry Springer and that Steve Wilkos dude)...

This stuff goes on in Russia, but the police take care of the situation pretty quickly, if you know what I mean...

Canada is doing pretty good, proportionally speaking and considering we have one tenth the population. The Americans would have to add at least 31 more to catch up to us. And I think it goes on in other countries, but is either not reported as such, or does not attain the media coverage. China is entirely censored, Russia partly censored, and France has a pretty easy education system, so no one needs to go postal.

I agree, but personally i wouldn't go too far to say that all Americans are idiots. IMO there are always opposites, if there's an idiot then there's a genius. America can harbor some of the biggest idiots to walk the earth, but also the smartest and funniest humans to make you pee your pants laughing.

but on a serious note... Does anybody notice how the Media turns these killers into some kind Martyr after their killings? (sp?)

Remember Cho seung Hui? He modeled after Eric and Dylan (Columbine), except it wasn't good enough for him to just go and do it, he actually videotaped beforehand and sent it to a news station. These people know that the news is going to goble it up like they always do.

The news wouldn't gobble up those stories if the folks back home expressed their revulsion at same. You see, there's a symbiosis going on here. No use getting high and mighty about the media - the people themselves have plenty of appetite for all sorts of sordid content.

What I see from those stats is that Canada has twice as many school shootings per capita than the U.S., despite stricter gun laws.

In Russia and China a person would likely face the death penalty for a school shooting--so I guess your info shows that tougher sentencing prevents school shootings in countries rife with weapons.

Be careful how you wield statistics--they're a two-edged sword.
