Segregation Now - Get Blacks Out Of White Schools

Too harsh?

TheStar.com | GTA | Board okays black-focused school
Quote:
The black-focused school is a go.
After a heated but civil debate, Canada's largest school board voted 11-9 last night to open an alternative Africentric school to help fight a 40 per cent dropout rate among Toronto's black teens.
This makes sense:

Black Math is different than White Math (need to be able to count change when selling a dime bag)

Black Biology is different than White Biology (more emphasis on using DNA to identify your father)

Black English is different than White English (ebonics be good, axe anyones)

Black Geography is different than White Geography (need to know more about Harlem than the St. Lawrence River)

Too racist? Just the idea of a black-focused school is racist.

Want to stop dropouts? Make it mandatory that until the age of 18, students must attend AND pass school. Those who don't should be shipped off to educational bootcamps.

It's an idea whose time has come.

Right out of 1930s Alabama, that is.

It seems to me to be on its face a bad idea.

Ultimately, they're trying to improve the dropout rate by changing the social dynamic (because no young black student is going to stay in school just so he or she can learn more about George Washington Carver!). IOW, the board is saying they think an all-black environment will help retain students.

Given the very social nature of young people, I can kind of see where the idea has its roots (sorry, been waiting a long time to crack that joke), but I think that approach would be minimally effective at best.

Luckily, I doubt the black community will stand for it, and will sue the school board back to the Jim Crow age from whence this idea came.

Guytoronto's idea of compulsory till 18 is one option, though I think it would just create a bureaucratic army of truant officers. Recall your own youth: by the time you were 16 or so, you'd been in school most every day for more than 10 years. You were itching to do something different. "Playing hooky" became a common practice among the kids who felt they had already picked up all the skills they were going to from high school.

Funding africentric social structures within the existing school environments, it seems to me, would be at least as effective (and cheaper) than an all-black school. What's next, Emo High? Goth Middle School?

Ultimately, the establishment authorities can do little to stop school dropouts. The motivation to stay in school has to come from parents, black community and employers. For example, a program that targets youth employers that mandates "no job unless you're in school" till at least 18 would probably halve the problem (though I don't know that such a program would be legal).

I still like the idea of "No Driver's License" unless you are in school, or have a high school diploma.

Except this time it's the black community that wants it.

The people of the community wanted it... they voted for it, and now they got it. Welcome to democracy.

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure this is necessarily a bad thing. We have various schools for specific religions, languages etc. So why not? People are not being forced to go to that school and have the freedom to attend public school or private school as well... well, so as long as they can afford the latter, I suppose.

That was a very popular option in Florida. I never saw any figures on its effectiveness, but dropouts were still a problem when I left so I guess it's not fully effective.

To my mind, there's an easier approach: dropouts are subject to house arrest with NO ACCESS to internet or video games.

That should do the trick.

That's right.

Like it or not there is a ton of discrimination going on and the black community gets the brunt of a lot of it.
If it works it's good for all and by no means is it mandatory.

Personally I think all girls and all boys schools would be a good thing from grade 6 on as the development curve is very different for boys and girls plus there are social pressures as well that are avoided.

Cookie cutter one size fits all doesn't work........

Asian schools are old hat, I remember back in the 50's having a chinese friend, who after attending public school couldn't play with the rest of us kids cause he had to attend chinese school for a few hours.
Anyhow with French immersion, catholic, christian, military, private, first nations schools, and probably a few more I've missed, what's 1 more in the mix?
Anything that helps kids get an education.

As a former British Public School student I'm inclined to agree with this.
