The other day, I bought the new Norah Jones "feels like home" disk then found it was copy protected. The following is my email to EMI Music and their reply. Ya hafta bitch and let them know.
I mailed the disk today and I'll let you know the final result.

Hello Mr. Smith,

We are in receipt of your email and regret that you have experienced a problem with one of our products.

As requested we can offer to exchange the disc for you with one that is not copy controlled. You can send your copy to EMI Music Canada, c/o Quality Control, 3109 American Drive, Mississauga ON, L4V 1B2, to the attention of Nimmi Mudhar. We will acquire a disc that is compactable with your system.
Regards,
N. Mudhar

Sir, I recently purchased NORAH JONES' feels like home and found out that it is a copy controlled disk. According to the disk info, it is compatable with Macintosh computers but when I inserted the disk into my Mac, it was unable to access the Compact Disk Data Base (CDDB) to list the names of the tracks. The first time I tried, it returned four tracks listed Track 1 through Track 4 (not the actual names of the tracks) with track 4 having a play time in excess of fifteen minutes. I tried again and this time it listed Track 1 through Track 12 with track 12 having a play time of over 15 minutes. Both times I double clicked on the disk, it opened a window showing the disk 1..disk 2 etc. icons. The third time I couldn't even access the CDDB and now when I opened the disk, it was showing a "Mac Player" icon plus Windows software. I have no intention of installing your software when I have perfectly good software of my own (iTunes) When I took the disk back to the store, I was told that all they could do was to replace it. Well, the new copy is just as erratic. When it wont even return the correct NUMBER of tracks, I can't even type in the track names manually. I purchase all my music legally and if I want a copy for the car, I burn a copy. I notice that this Norah Jones disk does NOT carry the CD logo. As this disk does not play on my Mac as expected, I intend to mail it back and would like the appropriate name to include on the address. I will be more careful in future when purchasing audio disks to ensure that they carry the CD logo. They will not include copy protected EMI disks. Thank you, Rob Smith

I had the same problem, I posted about it here
Copy Controlled CD's

I did not have to send back the disc though.
I keep asking anybody and everybody to email EMI about this crap, they are trying to stiffle technology.

I agree with you MacDaddy. EMI is satisfying me because I complained to them and they just hope I will say nice things about them now. I am still pissed over the whole idea of copy protection and mailing back the disk just added to the cost.
They are planning to release a lot more titles so everyone who is against it should email them.
Cheers

I had very little trouble with David Usher's album Hallucinations which is supposedly copy protected. It works in my iBook and G4. I've found you need to open iTunes first and then put the CD in. If I put the CD in before launching iTunes, then it doesn't work.

I've had issues playing two copy protected CDs from EMI. When I emailed them all I was required to do was scan the back cover of the CDs in question and email the images to them.

Interestingly enough though, the issues I had weren't with playback in my computer, but rather my stereo.

I was able to rip my CD with iTunes, but every 5-10 seconds I would get nasty static over the audio.
What was funny was that I was not asked to send back the disc, which was great because I returned it to the store and got a Non Copy protected disc from another artist, but they did say that would be required for any future replacements, which is fine by me because I will never purchase another EMI recording as long as they put copy protection on them.

I am working on a petition for this.

I don't have OS9/Classic installed on my system and haven't found a copy protected CD yet that I can't rip and query the CMDB for. I rip them beacuse I have paid for the disc and want to listen to them on my G5 and I have an MP3 player in my car.
