: App Sales

Anyone have any info/links on what apps sell on the iTunes App Store? What does it mean if you are in the top 10 in terms of numbers and is it a weekly top 10 or all-time?

I know there are a lot of dead apps out there but with "250 million iOS devices" in circulation there has to be some stats on what a particular app has sold. In some abstract way I feel like apps are the new "album" and there is no shortage of album sales stats. There a lot of cool indie developers with great games who have made names for themselves much like a band might. Great ideas and hard work!

Anyway, I read this the other day and it got me wondering but it's hard to find numbers and stats related to any one developer or app. I guess because it's really only the developers biz but I seem to remember reading "success story" articles that gave details. I just can't find any now.

The 'Top 10 Free' and 'Top 10 Paid' lists are, I think, calculated weekly based on # of downloads. The 'Top 10 Grossing' I believe is an all-time figure, i.e. the highest grossing app ever, even if it's not currently a hot item.

I don't have any solid references to back this up, but this is my understanding of how it works based on what I've read in the iOS developer forums and based on what other devs have said.

Personally I have two (free) apps in the store that are probably languishing towards the bottom of their respective categories, and I have zero idea of how many people have downloaded them. I don't even know offhand where to get that information. At one point (when I was paying closer attention) I couldn't find any reports or info that gave total # of downloads, only a breakdown of downloads per day, so I had to add it up myself to figure out how many times they'd been grabbed. I assume for paid apps, it'd be easier to figure out just by adding up whatever amount of money had been remitted. Or maybe they've updated the reporting mechanisms since '09.

Thanks for the tip. Maybe I'm just not seeing it right, it still only gives me daily and weekly view options, rather than 'monthly' or 'yearly' or 'since time began'. I'm too lazy to try and count up all the weekly numbers. :)

Cheers!
