In 2008 reports emerged that water leaking from Asse II since the 1980s is radioactive. To make matters worse, the mine itself is in such disrepair that it could collapse at any time.

Now authorities with Germany's Federal Office for Radiation Protection are making an unprecedented attempt to retrieve and relocate hundreds of tons of waste from the controversial site.

You would think German engineering would have provided for a better filing system, I stack my weekly garbage for pick up neater than that. Looks like they just drove a truck down there and open the hatch and let it all fall out, not really how you want to see nuclear waste handled. Hopefully they figure a way to clean it up.

When you call the facility "Asse," you're begging for trouble.

I was thinking the same thing... then realized they probably used a remote delivery vehicle with a dump... radiation, dontcha know....

Hmmm, I guess the German Translation to English would be Olestra....

Let's see-radioactive, Asse, water...

yep-they got problems....

I'd insert a joke about overly hot 'n' spicy curries or Taco Bell here, but that's just
too too easy...

Hope none of them canisters bust open.....
