: Problem with playing CDs

I have a number of CDs and DVDs with photos and home movies that I made when I had my PC. These all have paper labels on them. When I try and play them on my iMac, I hear a fairly loud whirring sound from the disc drive. I have ejected them right after, the whirring sound slows down and the CD ejects. Does the iMac optical reader not accept CD/DVDs with paper labels?

Also, I have WinXP running under Parallels. At the height of the whirring of the disk, a window opens up and wants to know if I want to play the CD/DVD with Windows Media Player. At this time, Parallels is not even open. Is this because the CD was originally made on a PC?

Once I get past the whirring noise, is there any way I can play the CD/DVD using QuickTime?

Thanks for your help.

Kevin

Paper labels and slot loading optical drives are a very bad combination. Ideally I would use an external tray loading drive to recover the data from the disks, re-burn then label with a marker.
