I have been pondering the question of upgrading from my 2007 MBP to a new 2010 model vs. getting a new SSD drive. If I get a new SSD, I would get something around 120 G and then put my HD into the space currently occupied by the optical drive. Has anyone done this? I would have the apps on the SSD and the files on the HD. I am wondering if this is a good idea. I especially wonder if this would improve the battery life or worsen it?

You should have a look at this recent thread which covers some answers and advices to your questions:

I've done it, and my main benefit is the increased speed to start/stop the MBP as well as any applications. I don't mind about the battery saving too much as most of the time my MBP is plugged.
Cheers.

Thanks, I'd forgotten about that thread and didn't see it past the first page.
