: Apple Releases a Gaming Console

Well, not yet. But it is an interesting thought and a curious question as to why they haven't entered into the gaming market as yet. There is a very interesting article at Crave (http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9940041-1.html) that discusses the issue and the possibility.

What are people's thoughts here about the potential for an Apple gaming console? What would you like to see? Wish list etc.

Well I'm sure it'll be an updated AppleTV. That is, a media center with gaming capabilities. Or maybe work in conjunction with ATV? Games will be downloaded from iTMS and will not be available on disc. As for what kind of gaming... who knows. Will they just go down the path of the 360 and PS3 (faster processors, better graphics) or will they innovate like the Wii and try to make gaming "for everyone else?" I can't imagine people supporting another 360/PS3 so I'm going to guess "family" gaming.

My friends in the game creation biz say no.
I pointed out Apple is very secretive but they insist they would know as it is a small industry.

yeah, my guess they will earn $$ from gaming via software sales on iTunes for the iTouch/Iphone and possibly Apple TV

They dont need to get into the console wars. Its a tight enough industry as it is

Misleading headlines are lame.

EDIT: I didn't bother reading the article. Nevermind. :D

~

I think anything is possible--never say never. There are some people who believed Apple would never go to Intel chips.

I think the industry is a tad oversaturated and hostile at the moment. With three major consoles and PC gaming, where exactly does Apple fit? I don't think people would take Apple seriously--they already have the stigma as a company that doesn't cater enough to the gaming industry (nor produce decent gaming machines.)

Totally agree but you're talking about gamers. That's why I think they get into the Wii type casual gaming market... if this console is real that is.

I hope they don't. One reason I have respect for Apple is because they don't appear to pander to the lowest common denominator i.e. "gaming," complete with sex and violence. I think there's a place for this in movies (stories), but when you become the participant, as in a video game like GTA4, blowing people away or screwing prostitutes, or maybe both at the same time, there's something just a little unsavoury about it. It's a long way from MYST, people. So far Apple seems to keep high standards as to what it will license and what it won't. Call me crazy.

I tend to agree with with you fjnmusic. However, it is interesting to contemplate the possibility, because they definitely removed Computer out of their name for a reason. It certainly makes you believe that they are looking at seriously diversifying their product offerings.

If they were to enter the gaming arena, they clearly wouldn't do it in a carbon copy manner, they would only do it if they could be revolutionary and bring about a paradigm shift. Maybe bring some class and intelligence to gaming along with a new cool factor.

The gaming industry has been the same now for so long, how many iterations (albeit with greater, visuals and sound each time) of the same thing over and over again can people ingest before they finally get sick and tired and desire something totally new and refreshing. Certainly the WII has come the closest to doing that of any of the console developers, with their unique gaming user input hardware, but how much have the games themselves really changed?

I think because, as MannyP alluded to, the market is so close to being saturated right now it may have reached a tipping point where someone like Apple could enter the market and turn it on its head. I don't know what that would look like, I just thought some people here might have some ideas or speculations about what Apple could or would do to revolutionize the industry.

I agree - the title is misleading. It should read:

Not all games resort to sex and violence? Alot only resort to violence, alot don't resort to either sex or violence, and provide a nice fantasy environment. I don't have a problem with Apple going into the gaming market, although the first thought I had was the same as Manny's, that it's a crowded market already with the 3 gaming consoles. But then, Apple always seems to have a better way of doing things.

As for Apple changing their name from Apple Computers to Apple Inc, well that was a long-time coming as they had already diversified into the music player market, and then diversified into the phone market. Likely Apple's got plans and designs in R&D for other devices in other markets as well.

Just putting it out there - but the graphics chip in the AppleTV (GeForce 7300) is more powerful than the one in the Wii.
