I hooked up a USB 2 dvd burner to my old g3 400 powerbook pizmo via
it's USB 1 port and as suspected, veeeerry slllooooow.

So if I buy say, a plextor dvd burner which has firewire and hook it up to my
pizmo, will I see a dramatic speed improvement?

A 2.5 minute .vob file burnt w/toast took 7m 15 secs w/16x speed media
and 16x burner. Would it atleast halve the time w/a firewire dvd burner or am
I wasting my time. I already have two other machines, but I'd like to make use
of the pizmo.

Any suggestions for brand of firewire dvd burners that will work with pizmo?

HUGE THANKS for any advice!!!

Yes is the short answer.

USB 1 is limited to 4x with cd-rw, which is 0.6MB/sec vs. 16x dvd-rw which is 21.6MB/sec.

Firewire is 50Mb/sec so it more than covers it.

I'm absolutely AMAZED to hear of a USB1-speed DVD burner that works AT ALL.

Hooking a FW dvd burner to the FW port should yield the kind of speeds you expect.

PS. If this is your only computer, you're WAAAAAAAAY past time to upgrade. Love the pismo, but it's time to let a second horse into that stable, podner!

As to your other questions re brands - I buy the burner and case separately and put them together myself. Takes 5 minutes, it's cheaper than a pre assembled one and you can pick what you want.
The first one I bought was an LG burner because I wanted the option to use RAM disks and KG was one of the few that handled those at the time. I expected to have to use Patchburn to get the Mac to recognize the LG, but it turned out that wasn't necessary - I just plugged the burner in and off i went.
The most recent one I bought was a Pioneer for about $30.- plus another $35 or so for the case. Pioneer was one make that Apple used at some time, maybe they still do and it is probably the most compatible.

Yabba Dabba Doo

Thanks all for your post! Just wondering.
Asuming I have two FW hard drives, Is it possible to instance 2 toast apps
and burn at the same time to two FW burners. I know my DP G5 does that, but
can a g3 400 pizmo do that?
I'm guessing no, but I've been wrong before.

Anyone selling any FW dvd burners?
Thanks again!
