: Weird posting error?

May 24th, 2004, 01:56 PM
I get the following message when i try to post something with an URL:

Sorry, we do not permit the following HTML tag or attribute: Parenthesis in HTML tag

Anyone else getting this? It only happened when i tried to post a link to the Safari patch on Apple's website...

Very weird!

UPDATE: After some testing, it seems to dislike the brackets around the 10_2_8 portion of the URL. Here is the URL without the brackets...

Not that I can explain what is going on, or offer a fix, but a quick workaround for most URL problems (especially with very long databaseish URLs) is to use tinyurl.com (http://tinyurl.com) to radically pare down an unwieldy, long URL.

Thus, since you'd be referring UBB to a hosted short url which does not contain any components UBB considers "exotic" - it cannot object, and you can bypass its problems with whatever URL you are trying to post.

tiny url equivalent of the long parenthesis URL (http://tinyurl.com/yqlmt)

The following URL:

has a length of 78 characters and resulted in the following TinyURL which has a length of 24 characters:

P.S. I note that UBB does not even allow the parentheses to be represented by their numeric entities. It allows parentheses in quoting code segments, so such an URL can be posted using the CODE UBB tags </font><blockquote>code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;"> http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/securityupdate_2004-05-24_(10_2_8).html </pre>[/QUOTE]Not clickable, but at least you CAN quote it. :D
